What do people generally think of sedo's appraisals? I ask this because i am considering getting a few 'professionally' appraised by them. Is it worth $39 or whatever they charge???? And if they do give you an appraisal do people generally trust the value they deem worthy of the domain?

From my experience with their appraisals (just like any other company's) is they are a waste of money and the actual appraisal Sedo makes is just based on a template and is barely customized.

I remember Sedo saying that the domain I had appraised has "no commercial value"
(because the domain uses a "Z" instead of an "S") and they still valued it at $8,000!

(What I didn't tell them is that the domain makes about $6,000 profit per month! Good thing I didn't rely on their appraisal when selling!)

As you can see from my experience with their appraisal, it was a total joke and the person who sent it to me didn't even bother to lookup the meaning of the domain they were appraising -- I'm angry now I didn't request a refund!

I suggest you post your domain(s) in this forum's appraisal section for free!

Thanks for the info buddy, saved me a few $$$ i will post on this website then!

Is there any truely professional way to get your domain appraised or are they all a waste of time and money.

I suppose the well known statement, 'it's only worth what someones willing to pay!' springs to mind!

Don't even think to bother with Sedo's, or anyones appraisal. I had one ridiculous experience with Sedo "appraisal" moths ago. It is too long and too dumb to even report it here. Paying for an appraisal to anyone is a waste of money. Just read these boards, DNJournal, as well as other reported sales and you will figure out everything you need.

Very true: 'it's only worth what someones willing to pay!'

I never found a site offering true, custom and professional domain name evaluation services... and gave up looking some time ago.
I feel if you are serious about buying and selling domains you should not need such a service.

Good luck!

Yeah but the idea of buying an appraisal is to receive a true market value of which to base your asking price on? Whether serious or not you dont want to sell for less than it's worth, or overprice your domain!

I think there should be an 'official' source to which you can get your domain appraised. Such as one 'official' appraiser per domain extension. Even though it would never happen!! But maybe a panel of the most experienced domainers for each, could get together and give it a go? But domain appraisals seem to have got such a bad reputation now, it's probably not going to be reversable to a positive situation. But i suppose you just have to put your trust in forums such as this though.

this would be a good idea a part from the practicality of the issue. define famous domainer?

there would also have to be a recognised industry signature for such appraisals or something like that....

Get your appraisal info from several sources including keeping updated
on current dn sales (dn journal, Sedo, Afternic, etc).

Also, don't even rely on the "experts" on this forum. Get some input but don't think it's gospel.

I had one domain some clown here insisted was worth no more than $50.

Turned around and sold it on Afternic for $3995. And I honestly think I
let it go for too little.

I suppose that some people may have their own agenda or the simple fact that whats worth money to me, may be worth nothing to someone else!

For instance my collection of domain names. I am finding them hard to shift for the pure fact that their .co.uk and so get a right slagging down in the forums, people obviously disliking them. But i think i read that they were in the top 5 domains to own anyway i can't see why people dislike them so much. Yet you see .co.uk's going for good amounts such as hardcore.co.uk for £25,000!

Unless anyone knows of a co.uk fan???? I can tell you he/she hides well!!!

Yep!

...... and I remember when GreatDomains charged $75.00 for "professional" appraisals.

See what they have professionally priced those .TVs and .CCs at on their site.

Example: (my) bug.cc - $10,000

I think the market is to new and dinamic to have any kind of "appraisal model" that does now have massive black spots and makes huge mistakes with values. Names are work what people are willing to pay for them and what you are willing to sell them at - so NO WAY is it worth having it appraised.

Very, very amateur service from Sedo. Even their 39-Euro "premium" appraisal service is clearly just a "glue the paragraphs together" cut and paste hack.

They didn't bother to check OT *with* extension. They didn't bother to check ownership of similar names. They said that a domain with a super-prime generic descriptive single word was more valuable because the word was "in the dictionary" etc. Save your money!

If you want to list a domain above $10K on their site you may need to do at least a cheap appraisal. I was happy with their low cost appraisal on psychology.info and it allowed me to list it at EU80K.
