Nice to see that people noticed the new acquisition! We will be releasing a press release about the acquisition shortly, but I'll give you guys a scoop on the details:
The purchase of Sedo.com is the result of over two years of negotiating effort, and no, it definitely did not come cheaply. As Nico mentioned, Sedo was founded as a German company where .com is a distant second to .de. Thus, the founders didn't worry about not having the .com version of their brand name.
When I joined to develop the English markets a couple years later, the owner of Sedo.com (whose last name happened to be Sedo) was asking over $1 million for the name!!
I think we've shown that it is possible to develop a successful site on ccTLDs even in the US (Sedo.us has gone from nothing to close to $1 million in domain sales processed this month in under 2 years), but it created a lot of hurdles that a growing company could really do without!
In the end we had to put our money where our mouth is, and set a good example for all those other companies out there with "domain deficiencies"-- just buy it!! It is an investment that will pay for itself in both direct and indirect benefits within a relatively short period of time.
