sending 'for sale' emails

I was just wondering.

If one owns a domains, for example (example.net) is sending a note to the owner of 'example.com' considered spam?
is there a 'nice' way to do this?
I have received a few of these myself and never taken offence, but I wonder what the general attitude is.

It wouldn't offend me. Keep it short and to the point. If they're not interested they can just delete it.

One civilized, isolated, unsolicited e-mail should never be considered as SPAM. If you/they do it every day or week, then its a whole different story.

As long as the domain in question pertains to their business you won't have any problems. You may run across someone who doesn't know any better tell you to not spam them but they can't do anything to you for doing it.

I've sold many domains, via direct email marketing. A courteous, professional, brief email is all that is necessary, including a contact phone number.
