Setting Up Members only site

I looking at setting up a members only area of my site. I have no idea where to begin. Any help would be appreciated. Especially in regards to setting up the "locked" portion of the site.

Where do I get a hold of CPanel...is that a program I can buy or is it something provided by some webhosts?

CPanel is provided with most hosting packages.

There are many ways to make member only pages. If you have a member database already, it will be much easier. Of course you can just password protect certian pages, using .htaccess or PHP or whatever method you would like, and only give the password to certian members.

I will be the second one to recommend using vB as a content manager for your paid site

It has features that no membership script can match for this price! The template can be easily modified to look like a content site rather than Forums

I will be going over these options this week. One big hurdle I have is learning MySQL...I am so wet behind the ears on this it isn't funny.

I am looking for a resource (book or otherwise, I tend to avoid the Dummies books but if someone recommends it that may be different).

I've worked with basic databases such as Goldmine but I've never set one up.
