Someone who own a car dealearship wants to buy a domain from me to use for his deaership... he has been using the .net and wants the.com.

How much should i ask him for?

It is one of those names that it may not be obvious it could be used as a car name ( i was using it as something totally different) but he uses it as one....

I am guessing he will pay a pretty penny for it but how much do you think...

Do plenty of research on him to find out about his business, how big, which cars sold etc - should give you an indication of what it's worth to him.

Agree with Mr. Web... also, knowing the name would help.

Ask for 10K. Settle for a decent $$$$ amount.

I find this thread hard to believe. How can you value a name without knowing what it is? Also, assuming that the buyer has a potful of money is no critea for putting a price on a domain. People are not stupid, especially wealthy people.

Ed30 is right on IMHO this time.
I guess he's not always in a bad mood :-)

If you dont research the business you are going to sell it to, how can you put a price on it???
Price it to high, and he just might get an alternative .com and re route the traffic, after a while people WILL adopt the new name.

That's why I think it is not wise to send an offer that is too high.

Yes.. but is the name his business name? Then obviously he would definately want this name over another name.

which brings us back to the 'loop', we dont know the name, but only can assume things by the post, such as the owner using it for other things...etc...

and, back on track, do research.
Let's say I have a small business called cyphix, do you think I would hesitate to change the name to tigermonkey If I think my customers wont care and I get the .com etc...???

I do not want to say then name - i usually do but i was kindly asked not to reveal it. I make about 100 bucks a year from the name so nothing big.

He is pretty big (it is a bigger than avg. american car dealearship) - i am sure he is a millionair and the price range you all suggested is what i expected... i was debating on asking between 6-9k. I guess i will start out at 8999 and bid down - i am sure he is a good negotiator considering his type ofbiz.

I asked him to make an offer and he said he does not know how mcuh these things go for so to quote him a proce and then he would see if he could 'fit it into his budget'

It doesn't matter whether he's a millionaire or not - price it sensibly or you'll lose the sale.

By buying overpriced???

I am not saying --- nor can I say as I dont have any info, about your price, but just trying to help you not lose a sale.

I think not, but I don't know for sure as you won't tell us the name. Don't assume that someone with more money than someone else will necessarily pay more - quite often they will expect to pay less - that's how they became wealthy in the first place.

Very true.... how did he become a millionaire? By making smart business decisions! Although if he really wants it who knows how much he will pay! :-)
