"...I asked him to make an offer and he said he does not know how mcuh these things go for so to quote him a proce and then he would see if he could 'fit it into his budget..."

Yeah right :)

Ask him what he makes off one car sale.

Ask him if his "budget" can afford to lose a few sales per year from prospective customers looking for his website who finally end up in yours...

And then ask him again to make you an offer :)

Good Luck

I agree..ask him for a new car and if he says NO...then you know where you stand with this guy.

If he has no idea about domain values he might just hang up the phone.

I would feel it out first. When you decide to send him a quote, it is beneficial to send some support documents (like a list of recent domain name sales prices).

To an outsider the prices we pay for domain names must sound foreign.

Hope it helps!

I've not sold any domains yet so I don't really know what I'm talking about, but personally I'd either:

1. Decide on a figure I'd want then double the price and give it to him. Remember that company owners negiotate supplier prices down every day - most are very good at it. Whatever price you quote he'll want (and will get) something of it - so start high!

or

2. I'd play at being ignorant yourself. Say that I "only do the domain thing as a hobby" but that I've spoken to a friend who says that domains all sell for $100k, and that I've learned that professionals now often rent out domains each year to companies (that last bit should scare him with thoughts of rising prices and incomplete control over the domain). I'd make it clear that "I don't know if thats all true or not" (appearing ignorant). If he thought that I knew less than he did (I'd need to appear clueless for this to work), and thinks that I might start listening more to these friends that have been quoting rediculous prices, then I'd bet he'd quickly get worried and attempt to lower my expectations (i.e. laugh at the price/instantly state its much too expensive etc). Hopefully this would tip his hand by showing me that he DOES have an upper limit in mind - and I'd follow it up with "what figure were you actually expecting?" and hope for the best :)

This guy made millions because he knows the power of marketing and sales.. IF this domain is going to bring him business (or keep him from losing business), then he will pay your asking price... Really, thats the essence of it, not whether the domain name has intrinsic value or not.... It could be qqzzffjj.com and if that is happens to be his company name, he _needs_ your domain... His customers are not finding him (and finding you instead), and he knows he could be losing sales because of it....

Hey, on the off chance you need a new car, maybe you can trade for a new vehicle? :-)

Oh, and giving him a "primer" on the cost (and value) of domains is a good idea.
If he's ignorant about domains, he could tell you to take a flying leap...
