Hi everyone,

(First and foremost - this isn't a shameless plug for my domain name - I really need help)

Since registering "TheSweetest.com", I have had a lot of interest in people wanting an email address to this address. These people have NOT been from the Internet or people emailing me find the name from a whois search - rather, these are people I know that I've told about my and my husband's email addresses I set up after registering the name. (I have [email protected] and he has [email protected]).

Anyway - what I'm wondering is:

1. Does anyone think it would be a good idea to simply make a web site devoted to offering people an email address [email protected]?

2. I could easily redirect the names, but would that be enough to satisfy people?

3. Could I put a small charge for the service? Would people be willing to pay? (Like $5.00 or something)

4. What legal problems could arise?

5. I feel it would be best suited to, and most utilised by, the female market - I know about 5 women who I've told (and that's five out of five who I've told I could redirect their chosen name to their existing email addy who are very interested) - or does anyone feel there's something I'm missing here?

6. I'll repeat, this isn't a shameless plug for my name - I really think it has good potential from the response I've seen so far - BUT, i'm worried that redirecting names wouldn't be enough and how could I guarantee that their email would always get through?

Thank you all so much for any help/comments/suggestions you have.

Hi, I think $5 for an email address like that sounds like a good deal - gives people a memorable name.

If you wanted to offer something extra, how about a personal weblog / picture-gallery type home page at: http://username.thesweetest.com

You could (I may not be 100% correct on the technical terms here) setup wildcard dns so that anysubdomain.thesweetest.com gets redirected to a script, that displays the individual's site based on the anysubdomain value - does that make sense?

good luck with it anyway :)

no, not url redirection to their own site, they get their own (simple) site at theirname.thesweetest.com - you can set it up so that for example, http://anysubdomain.thesweetest.com/ redirects (not sure if correct term) to http://www.thesweetest.com/ (this might be by the server, rather than dns), but http://anysubdomain.thesweetest.com/ stays in the browser.

You then have a script that checks whether a subdomain or the main domain is selected, and then display a page accordingly.

I don't think I'm making this any clearer  so here's an example - (I was thinking of doing this on this site):

http://www.makesyou.com - this takes you to a simple welcome / sign-up page

There are two (demo) users - queen and bush.

You can visit their home pages at http://queen.makesyou.com and http://bush.makesyou.com

If you type in a non-existant username (ie http://addictive.makesyou.com ) you get a page telling you this username is available, and asking you to sign up for email / homepage.

All of this runs from one script which is called regardless of what subdomain is called, and displays the correct page depending on whether it is a user's subdomain, an unused subdomain, or the home page.

As its just a demo, the only things on the user's page is a picture and a message, hardcoded into the script, but if you were setting this up for real, you could set up a weblog / photo / whatever script that displays the specifics for each user from a database.

Anyway, I hope that explains it, and hasn't just made everyone  . If anyone wants to see the script that does the site I can post it here (66 lines long)

hope that helps, Sam :)

You can use www.oemmail.com as your email hosting provider. I am in the middle of setting it up for www.HiPal.com but having some problems with the MX CNAME thingy at the moment.

You will want to use a provider so that you do not have to build spam software. Try www.everyone.net I have heard they are acceptable.

I like to run a site just like that for iamhorny.org.

Maybe a lot of porn cam webmasters will want to use [email protected] email address to spam people or set up their cam pages.

And I believe most people find an email that's sent by [email protected], they are more likely to check it out.

Can anyone help me to set up such a site for some money, or anyone wants to be my 50/50 partnet and CEO the site?

Thanks!

 when I saw the second example! Very funny indeed.

Good idea too but unfortunately, I'm only a novice when it comes to all this development stuff. I'm learning more each day but am a bit afraid this would be out of my league just yet. (The words "scripts" and "database" still scares the life out of me - lol).

Thank you all so much for your suggestions - I am taking note of them and I do have a friend who's pretty cluey in this regard so maybe he would help me out in order to set it up.

I like the idea of being affiliated with dating services too - now it's just a matter of putting all this information into the right format so it creates a nice opportunity for both myself and the people who would like to use the email address @thesweetest.com.

You guys are , thanks heaps.

Deb :D
