Does anyone know what the first 10 .com domain names were? Is there a list ordered by date?

Here are the first 10 domain registered. Not all .com's though.

RUTGERS.EDU RUTGERS UNIVERSITY 4/24/85
MIT.EDU MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 5/23/85
THINK.COM THINKING MACHINES CORPORATION 5/24/85

thank RJ, that's interesting info. where did you get it from?

Does not surprise me the EDUs are most of teh first. . . When I started using the internet (1988), it was basically all academia.

I miss those days sometimes.

It took 16 months for the first 100 domain names to be registered. And they were free (meaning no cost) until 1995.

-RJ-, I wish I knew what your crazy avatar was all about :)
Why are the first letters underlined? Is it a code? What's a ssasiacisoy?

A domain that was registered before all of those was:

nordu.net (Registered 01-Jan-1985)

Yes, nordu.net was used for the first ever ROOT server (nic.nordu.net). It hold's the claim as the first ever domain name, as it was created by the registry (for use by the registry) on DAY 1.

Hi, RJ

How about Sun Microsystems.

SUN.COM
Record created on 19-Mar-1986.

Same day with IBM :)

Nice find. I'll update the list accordingly. :)

The first 12 .com domains

INTEL.COM 25 Mar 86
ATT.COM 25 Apr 86

I think stargate.com was second regged .com.

The whois for stargate.com shows Domain created: 08/05/1986. That's early, but not as early as the others shown above. It does predate by quite a long time the existence of the domain registrar that has the name now (which actually had stargateinc.com before it acquired it).

...And, Stargate now has adopted the dumbass trendroidism of referring to themselves as "Stargate.com, Inc." (adding the dot-com to their name just as most companies run by sane people were dropping it). Ironically, their emails (e.g., reminding of upcoming domain expirations) say they're from "Stargate.com, Inc." but actually use a "From:" address in "stargateinc.com", causing cognitive dissonance in anybody who reads them.

Some of these dot-com company communications remind me of the old joke of people asking "What's the phone number of 911?", with the added punchline of the answer turning out to be something different from what you'd expect. Thus, the Internet address of Stargate.com is stargateinc.com; the address of Barnes & Noble.com (not even a legal domain name itself due to the spaces and ampersand) is bn.com, and the address of Barcelona.com, Inc. is easybarcelona.com (this latter case not being their fault, as a really stupid UDRP and court decision led to it).

Yeah, the nerve of that computer company squatting on a domain that would be perfect for a Harry Potter site... :)
