The it.com Domains team has been awarded Gold and Silver at the prestigious 20th Annual w3 Awards, joining the ranks of winners such as Amazon, Citi, and FIFA. The w3 Awards celebrate the world’s most innovative digital campaigns across emerging tech, branded content, and immersive experiences.
Both awards were given to it.com Domains for the innovative project ‘Hans Niemann 2025 vs.You: The Largest AI-Powered Online Chess Game Between the World and the Grandmaster’ – a unique online event that brought together thousands of players from around the world against grandmaster Hans Niemann in a live match powered by AI (artificial intelligence).

On November 13, 2024, Hans Niemann engaged with the AI-assisted World Team in an interactive chess match at the Web Summit held in Lisbon. This event attracted 106,638 participants from around the globe, representing 132 countries. The match set a new record by surpassing the previous milestone set by Viswanathan Anand in 2012, which had 60,000 online competitors. The game lasted a total of 42 minutes and involved 71 moves. It was hosted on chess.it.com and featured an AI assistant that provided real-time strategic advice. This competition highlighted the potential of technology to enhance the appeal and reach of chess, establishing a new benchmark for interactive global chess events.
The project exemplifies how modern AI technologies and it.com Domains infrastructure enable the creation of large-scale, next-generation interactive events, engaging audiences in new ways and blurring the boundaries between online play, AI, and real-world participation.
