Those of you who have a webpage up to catch type-ins to sell your domains, do you have better luck just saying " This domain for sale " or " This domain for sale for $xxx " ? Thanks.

This domain is for sale............works much better

You can then always adjust your sale price based on the response that you get.

For instance if you get an e-mail @microsoft.com, you know they have a little more money to spend.

Just a thought....

I agree.Without naming a price negotiations are possible.I even set up individual themed for sale pages that match the domainnames theme so a potential (enduser) buyer gets more attracted to the domain(hopefully thats is).
To see what i mean go to one of my for sale pages:

Do companies go under cover though? ie would microsoft (for example) try and get the domain using a hotmail email address?

Yes they do. I had an offer once, from a free email based account, and after some nego, they forgot to reply with that account, or something like that. The domain address was actually from a Korean Company. I made a few k on that sale, (I almost asked only $400) :)
