Hi Jonathan.
The first thing I would have to wonder is how is the UMPC doing in Japan. I know Samsung released it's brand for the Microsoft platform. But then Microsoft is planning on coming out with the Touch Pack software.
The UMPC is great in concept and design, but I do not think it is portable in the sense that the PDA and cell phone is. You can not place it in your pocket and you can not talk on it...then along comes mobi which makes this seem even more obsolete.
Asia (Japan, Korea, and Taiwan (china)) typically seems to be the forerunner of trends. Considering UMPC is old news, has it been successful in the far east? If not, or if it has been so overshadowed by all the newer technology, then it may be simply a reg fee domain.

There is supposed to be a new release of the UMPC sometime soon. Still usuable in business and some personal use. They are trying to expand the battery life to 6-8 hours.
Though I think its a good technology, I use my mobile phone. But some Japanese may want to use this during business hours.
China seems to like it as well
