I'm adding Overture support to DropShark, and I have a couple questions for those of you in the know -

1. The example URL that I'm using has an "en-us" culture tag on it. Do any of you use other culture tags? Should I customize this?

2. How many hits to Overture's web site will they allow before they shut you off? I ask because I could have it hit for every compound word element, but that could be upwards of 30,000 hits. I would think Overture would shut someone off in very short order for that, no?

Hi Chris - Yes, Overture will block your ip after repeated hits by the same proxy that is why we use 100's of different proxys with our high speed Overture checker.

I could do the proxy trick, too, and have the overture results come down from the web service (as opposed to having the desktop software do it), but that's more work, obviously.

I'm wondering, then, if it would make sense to let the desktop software be able to spot-check, and the user is responsible for any shut-off if they abuse it, and maybe offering a subscription service for a complete dictionary/domain/compound data feed.

If anyone out there already gathers this data and is interested in talking about working together (so I don't re-invent the wheel), let me know. Otherwise, I suspect I'll start coding a proxy network shortly.

Too bad Overture doesn't offer a subscription service.

Maybe you can try ask overture can they offer such service... or suggest to them. Probably next time they will offer :)
