Acropolis is the name of the rocky formation in Athens, Greece that hosts a number of ancient temples; some well-preserved some not so good-looking after almost 2,500 years since they were built. The main temple is the Parthenon, dedicated to goddess Athena, protector of the city and sponsor of maidenhood and wisdom. There is a brand new archaeological museum at the foot of the Acropolis, that hosts a large number of incredible exhibits and hopefully one day it will host the complete set of the Parthenon marbles (that were stolen by Lord Elgin and currently hosted at the British Museum). The Acropolis is considered a cultural monument and its area is treated almost as a holy shrine. For example, a special exemption was given to Nia Vardalos in order to film the movie "My Life in Ruins".

Ah, sorry, got carried away :D The domain is priceless.

thanks Theo!!...maybe we should join up and develop the site!....

I'm sure Nia thanks you as well for the plug...:)

Tony

Not sure about Nia but her production studio was stingy when I sold them the domain :D

Ha!

While millions visit Acropolis every year, the average Greek visits it maybe once or twice in their lifetime. I've been on the rock about a dozen times.

During the occupation of Athens and Greece by the nazi Germans during WWII, a daring duo of Greek resistance fighters climbed the rock of the Acropolis at night and took down the swastika flag from the flagpole.

6 times and counting for me.......most recent was last year with my wife and son...first time for them......with every visit...you are more and more amazed with the Acropolis........still cant believe it was not voted as one of the 10 wonders of the world......????........

ps - Effin' Nazis!!!!

Yep. It wasn't one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world either, despite its visual glory during the reign of Pericles (who was born in Holargos).

Hell I never heard of the place until I googled it. Looks cool I have always wanted to visit Greece for its history. You probably have to develop it to see any significant value. Maybe a Wordpress site?:D

Nope must of miss it in history class. I've never been to Europe either but one day I'll have enough money to go visit I hope. You seem a little surprised that I have never heard of it. The education system in American is the pits. I learned more when I got out school than while I was in.

Latest news: The Greek pagan group "Ellinais" faced off police and rainy weather to appeal to goddess Athena, on top of the Acropolis.

Full info here :D
