Thanks all. I did get a lot out of this exchange - both related to my question and otherwise...

I'm pretty new around here - I can see how rules need to be established to prevent those who do not exercise common sense from exploiting forum priveleges. But I welcome and accept all possible answers to my question, like a search engine, and I'll just choose what's best for me.

I also think that promotion is part of this medium. The way people go about it distinguishes who they are. And that's something I also can choose what's best for me. By having it public, not PMed, other's benifit from the same resources, advice and tips from senior members and the exchange adds value to the forum.

It's all good. That's just what I think :)

Hey BTW, isn't that Cinderella touting dnforum wares at the gold cafe?

Thank you very much.

If they really want to crack down on user promotion, they may as well turn the forum off, becasue a lot of the people that post here, post uninformative postings just to get their signature line in the crossfire, and a small trickle of traffic from those that click their signatire links.

If the mods don't want people promoting their services, then disable signatures alltogether. How's that for a thought? And, that's coming from me. This thread really irritates me.

Many members also get irritated by posts of self-promotion.
The sig is available for you to promote your sites (but NOT for affiliate links) and is there for everyone to use.
Nobody is "cracking down" on anything - the recent spate of self-promotional posts is that, recent, and coming from a very small number of members - however the policy has been here for a long time.

I strongly disagree that "common sense" applies in this situation.
To be honest, I do find a lack of common sense in some of the posts here. Sigh ... speechless.

Hi

cinderella promotions of DNF wares is, letting you know what is avavailable to you as a member of this forum on behalf of the owner.

quite a distinction IMO

Also..mod's don't make the rules!
They/we only try to enforce/regulate/advise the guidelines that are established or considered.

signatures are a benefit, given by the owner, with specific guidelines.

it's not that big of a deal to conform to advertising policy!

if you are clever in your marketing efforts......you can still promote your interests within the constraints of the "rules of advertising".

A long time. Interesting.

Please modify some of my posts, I just didn't know what I was doing. I've gone ahead and made local copies for my own records, so don't worry I'll be mad.

You can actually do this exercise for a number of members in the forum.
#1.) Find a URL they own that has a "running" website and service that may interest domainers, or be brought up in casual conversation.
#2.) Run a search

Here are some good threads to use as reference
for searches against other member names:

http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?t=27840
http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?t=21031
http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?t=49789

I'm sure I've got a bunch more. Didn't make a secret of it when I made the posts either. Sorry for the trouble.

Someone also started a new thread with direct links to other websites:

Is this considering "self-promotion"? I suggested some verbage earlier, but I'm not sure if anyone confirmed it. Outside of a statement, I'm not sure how to interpret the rules on this. This post is in the platinum lounge.
http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?t=67735

As a suggestion, its possible some moderator should "SPLIT" this thread, and divvy the posts up so that it isn't "hijacked".

How do you moderate this?
Same thing... such a shame...
The other day, a little boy asked his mother why he couldn't skip class and play football, when several of his classmates were doing the same thing and the teacher didn't seem to care. She then told him a story.

'The other day, an old lady was caught driving at 56 km/hr in the school district which had a speed limit of 40. When she was stopped by the police officer, she was really mad and said, "Do you see all those cars flying by, they are driving at 60 at the least. Why are you picking on me?" The officer calmly told her, "The fact that there are thousands if not more robberies going on in town every year does NOT give you the license to rob. And that only you are caught doesn't mean that we will not try our best to go after the others. Tell you what: they will be stopped at the next intersection."'

Okay, we all know that the little boy's mother is just telling a story: those other guys who speed or rob might probably never be caught. The good die young and the bad live splendid, long lives, that's life! HOWEVER, it doesn't give us the license to do wrong.

And seriously, people just don't understand how lenient and tolerantDNForum is . I could tell you that in most other places, this thread would DEFINITELY be tossed and the abuser banned (not warned, but banned outright). Ignorant, and you'll have to learn it in your second (forum) life ... elsewhere.

Hm...
Nexus, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  • Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  • If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Maybe not the best example, Mr. Mod?

Actually, I think its more like the cell phone commercials when they tell the little boy that he's gone over his "soccer" minutes, and the kid looks confused about what he's being penalized for. But that's me. So, I get it. Anyone who doesn't understand this rule (as intended) is at worst "ignorant" and at least, not using "common sense". Ok. I completely understand that we will never agree on what common sense is in this case. Seeing how not having common sense is akin to being called "stupid", I can't help but feel sleighted... but there you are.

Participants should use common sense. We don't have a written policy for everything.

I agree that some of the most aggregious abuses lack ANY common sense. But we're not talking about those in my opinion. If MediaHound in my opinion wasn't exercising "common sense", I wouldn't have agreed with his dismay. Unless I don't have "common sense" or any understanding of what forum "rules of thumb" are. Having been in this forum over 2 years, its amazing I've gotten by so long without getting myself banned.

LOL! I didn't notice that it's in the Exclusive section. ;) Okay ... basically, it's another long-time member posting about his experience "out there".
