I know that´s maybe a question that for some of you is a easy choice, but with the .info getting each day stronger I´m a little bit confused and want to know your opinion to make me decide on a few new domains registration.

Let´s say you want to register this domain....

MovieReview (just an example)

But…the .com is registered.

So what extension will you register then ( if available), and in which order of importance?

Movie-review.com

MovieReview.net

Movie-Review.net

MovieReview.info

Moview-Review.info

Please put your choice in a numerical order….so you can help me decide.

Thank you.

I would go as follows:
moviereview.net
movie-review.com
moviereview.info
movie-review.info

NB: Foremost an hyphen in a domain returns false overture and my wisdom of short experience tells me that you're likely to loose a lot of type in traffic if you use it.
Good luck

So why don´t you put ´moviereview.info´ first than ´movie-review.com´?

I don`t think .infos are that popular thus a .com with an hyphen could be of more value than a .info (specifically this name). However, this would depend on the keyword in question. But that is just my logical reasoning, perhaps someone else`s opinion would suffice to confirm this one. If i am wrong, some1 correct me. cheers

I agree with Abraham, in this particular example I think .com with a hyphen will be more valuable than .info, in other cases it may also depend on the keyword. My choice would be

MovieReview.net
Movie-review.com
MovieReview.info
Movie-Review.net
Moview-Review.info

I'm sorry to rain on your parade but I would put the .org before the .info. In this case with movie reviews maybe .info is very appropraite but in many cases, I would choose .com, .org, .net. then others, even some ccTLD's over .info. Just my opinion. Just so I explain my postion; you're always competing with .com so after that it really becomes a marketing effort and stratigically speaking each tlc/cctld may offer you a better position and sometimes even a uniquely created word will do better with .com at the end. Since moviereviews would be information, the .info would some like a good fit for your provided example.

Cheers,

Acro

moviereview.org far and away the 2nd best choice but strangely you did not even mention it in your list.

I don´t now why....but the org sometimes, seems to me to be to organizations or other institutions....why must i choose for example ´traintickets´ to register them with a .org extension?

I would choose .net or .info instead...but many of you are more experienced than I....

I personally like the .org allot. People know .org better than .info. The tld's and cctld's are really nothing more than what we make then. Yes, at conception, there were intentions to have .com, .net, and .org represent certain things but it really makes no difference. If you use .org, .es, .it, . whatever. The thing is your always competing with .com.

Thanks to so many domainers thinking that way it has helped me get some very nice org's which typically have natural traffic potential 2nd behind com's.

Amazingly I stil see ext like biz info net all taken but the org is avaliable for the reg fee.

Domainers differ in their opinions. Not everyone views .org as viable for certain keywords and phrases. Which is actually a good thing. General internet users have acclamated to .org as meaning organization or non-profit agency. org is a good fit in certain situations, not all. I would give near equal weight to the .net and .info and stay away from the hyphen in all extensions if you plan on branding the site. Hyphen is acceptable for SEO/PPC purposes, but a needless compromise if you want to promote the name (website) in the public arena.

I prefer .info, .net, .us, .org, .biz.. in that order

In order of preference I would register .info and .net

I work predominantly in the arts, with the most not-for-profit affiliations possible! .org is definitely associated with not-for-profit e.g. symphony.org = American Symphony Orchestra League. So the .org is perceived to be for those organizations and perhaps we can break away from it? My thoughts on perception? Perception, as determined sometimes by tradition, does become a reality.

In other words, I agree with Abraham (as pertaining directly to the question of the thread-starter), and leave the .org out of this equation.

I also find Carlton's remarks to be very well thought out.

hands down .NET first.

.BIZ last!

.net here is the next best option...then the hyphenated .com

Though some people preach hyphenated domains - I personally can't stand the look of them.

I would first target the market for the domain.
Seems to me as in the USA the .info is very little known.
And it seems as more and more people get aware of the .us domain extension.

However in Germany and UK (the two 2nd. largest domain sale countries)
the .info is very much known, almost like their cc = .de / .co.uk domain extensions.

Hyphen domains with real words are super search engine friendly, I feel......

And what about .eu ? This is something that no one should forget......
I personally believe that in 3 years from now the .eu will be second to .com,
maybe even earlier.....

1. moviereview.eu
2. movie-review.eu
3. moviereview.us
4. movie-review.us
5. moviereview.net
6. movie-review.net

just my2cents

I cant seem to dump my infos, even though they are good names imho, yet i see some major companies going with hyphens in dot com all the time
