I do not think buyers expect every registrar to use the same model. But I do think buyers value clarity, consistency, and a point where they can trust that a win is really a win.

So for those who have used a lot of platforms, which expired domain timeline feels most buyer friendly to you today?

ahhh.. really interesting one.. I have been thinking about this as well... +, at which time (after the renewal "due date") is it reasonable to activate "grace fees"

Yeah, we’re curious about this as well. We often see users complaining that their domains were “stolen,”
so to provide a better experience for our customers, we’ve been gathering feedback from different perspectives.

Once we’ve reached a well-grounded conclusion, we’d be happy to share it with you too, my friend, Helmuts. ;)

What are your current grace period settings? .. if you don't mind..

In our case (just made a bulk edit):
- Grace Period: 30 days / £0.00
- Redemption Period: 30 days / £80.00

It’s currently 30 days, but starting next month we will adjust our policy with reference to GoDaddy’s rules. Any advices? 🤔

Based on last week’s responses, my takeaway is that this may be less about specific timelines and more about whether there is a clear and easy-to-understand point at which control shifts from the registrant to the market, without ambiguity or reversal. 🤔

Wow :o .. GoDaddy seems to have properly prepared the timeline so they can profit from reselling the domains.. How is this within ICANN rules? .. checked with ChatGPT and they are fine (comply to ICANN and Verisign rules): https://chatgpt.com/share/69d38f06-fde0-8395-813d-e0990902feea

now, being brutally honest and knowing how often the users miss deadlines due to many reasons (incl. physically not being able to make a payment, and are asking to give more time) = I would not keep my domains with godaddy, now :/ .. ahh.. always recommended them and namecheap to many of our clients, and will not do that in the future as these expiry timelines are not in the best interests of the domain holders. not cool :((

@nicenic, do you plan to follow this route? .. are you preparing to launch a marketplace? .. in this case - this is how you "feed" it with valuable inventory.

Yeah, I get what you mean. We’ve seen the same thing happen to customers more than once, and it’s never a great feeling.

That’s actually why we try to reduce that “missed deadline” risk as much as possible on our side. We send multiple reminders, up to 11 notices, across the whole lifecycle, including before expiry, on the day, and even after, so people have plenty of chances to catch it.

We also laid out the full renewal, redemption, and auction timeline here in a simple way, so there are no surprises: https://nicenic.com/support/NiceNIC-Expired-Domain-Policy-Renewal-Redemption-Auction-Timeline-4738

From what we’ve seen over time, most domain losses don’t really come from the timeline itself, but from people simply not seeing or missing the reminders. So we’ve been putting more effort into visibility and clarity, rather than speeding things up.
