Is it World Wide Web 2.0? WWW2 is just a subdomain, you can name it anything you want. But I guess it is easier just name it www2.domain.com.

We use www. domain dot com for our static site and www1. domainname dot com for our transactional site. The www1 can be www2, Fred or whatever you want to call it.

You can set it up so that one points to one container on a server and one points at another container, therefore when you take the static site down the transactional site can still be active. Hope that makes sense...

Nonsense. Here are some valid theoretical subdomains:

The main thing is the domain and the tld. You will be able to name the subdomains in any combination you want. People since day one has use the subdomain (default) "WWW" stands for "World Wide Web". To really answer your question, www2 is just a quick way people will name things. If you want to make a copy of the file.txt on a directory, won't you rename it to file2.txt??

Is a default CNMAME in DNS language. That's what your browser will recognise/assume as a default.

Therefore, these will; generally speaking, not work:

http://www.www2.domain.com
http://www.www2.whatever.com

There are ways around this, but your site will not get resolved if you play with this standard.

A browser will expect to see a slash after the http://www.

Like http://www.mydomain.com/whatever

From the beginning the www subdomain was generally used to mark that it was a web site, (accessible via the http protocol), to distinguish it from other subdomains generally used early in the internet history. Remember internet DOMAINS existed long before the "web", so for example email servers, with subdomains such as "mail", "pop" or "smtp" and netnews servers with the subdomain "news", or ftp servers with the "ftp" subdomain, were used long before "www".
After the http protocol and html language was invented, the "www" subdomain was the natural one to use. For a long time many web sites didn't resolve on the domain only, only the www subdomain.
Now more and more skip the www, or use other subdomains even for web without www in front, but basically the domain owner can put anything in front to make any subdomain, (as has been pointed out above), the only thing that matters is which protocol that is used to access the server for the subdomain. (http), not if there's a "www" or not in front. And even the protocols used can be several for the same subdomain, since different ports are used, depending on protocol, and you often run several different servers, (web, mail, ftp, whatever), on the same system.
Generally www, www2, www3, etc... (or ww2 or whatever with numbering), are used for major web sites that either use it for load balancing, (same content on all servers), or spread different data over different servers.

yes this is right in a lot of cases this happens with affiliate programs where there are hosted sites or galleries, i think its found more in the adult end rather then the mainstream end
