What made you get into Domaining

When I found dnforum in 2005 I couldn't believe there was a whole forum dedicated to just domain names. I bet I'd be more successful if I had found it sooner.

Also, I Googled a domain I'd sold previously and found it on the DNJournal sales report, and that's how I discovered DNJournal. Again, couldn't believe there was a whole site dedicated to domain news and reporting sales. Should have found it sooner.

Started with first HTML very long ago. I was 10 years old. Then I tried to be Flash Designer - quickly didn't work out. Then server side programming. Then I started running a few small websites, basically as a webmaster. Then started flipping websites. Then started flipping just the domains.

My friend sold me $20 domain to develop into a forum. Decided to post it for sale instead, and someone offered $500 and sold it. After that, started buying out forum domains and quickly expanded from there.

Started with first domain flip in 2005/2006, so I got in pretty late. But programming has helped me make the majority of my buys/sales. I owe it to my technical knowledge / programming.

A friend of mine wanted me to invest with him in a porn site in late 2002, he told me all about PPC and how we could make money on the internet.
I was really interested but I was also running my own business at the time, I pushed the idea aside. (I look back now and kick myself)
About a year later I met another guy who was a domainer and we started talking about the internet and he told me about buying a selling domains to park and earn revenue through PPC. That was it for me I couldn't resist anymore, I had to try it for myself.
I ended up selling my other business so that I could concentrate on domaining.
I have no regrets.

I'm still not sure whether I'm a developer run amok or on the verge of being a domainer, but when I learned of the industry in late 2006 I was stunned there was a thing called 'direct navigation'; but that's the name given to that phenomenon where people search by key word, then add the -dot- com. I have always told my web design clients, "Make sure you get a name people will think to type into the browser." It actually is amazing to me how, when I say that to prospective clients, many people still look at me as though I have nine heads. I was never surprised at a domain name having value, that's why I tell clients to get a good name, in addition to the direct nav potential. What blows my mind is why I didn't follow my own advice for the first five years I was in business. Better late than never, even in this industry.

I was talking to a friend of mine back in 2005. We were all members of a Las Vegas car club. He mentioned that the founder of the club, who was a young guy in his 20's, had made somewhere in the mid six-figure range selling premium domains. (He owned numerous high end sports cars as well.)

I've been hooked ever since.
