I see alot of domains I bid on get picked up and I see a holding page like this

I know that on popular names it will usually go to auction and if pool, enom, snapnames or etc get it they out their holding page up, but I have been seeing alot of the above lately.

Not true, go to whois.sc and to a search, only look for deleated names, several hundred will come up depending on what you are searching for.

If You monitor drops, You know.
first thing snapnames uses NS1.INTERIMNAMESERVER.COM if the domain is in auction.

He could be right with 100% people register thousands of drops and then delete the ones they dont want after a 5 day test, then the drops go back into the available pool

What happens during the 5-day grace period is another matter. Many names are released during the 5-day grace period - but during the drop, no name will make it out unregistered.

And yes, individuals can and do get occasionally lucky. It's uncommon, but it happens.

Wrong.
Not all drops get registered. There are still leftovers. I don't know the % but the fact is, I wait for dropping names to be available and take them. Obviously many will not be available (backordered or swallowed by the vacuum cleaner registrars...).
Even then they may be cancelled within 5 days so you have another chance to grab them... Just because they do not pull enough traffic in 5 days doesn't mean the names are bad. I assume the "vacuum cleaners" are after money (traffic) and tend to discard other factors like the instrinc quality of the name.

They check the traffic for sure, but also a lot of people without knowledge which forgot to renew their domain are waiting when it drops and they plan to renew it when avilable normal way. And after they found, someone else got it, they send them an email asking to buy it. The "vacuum cleaners" ask everyone who asks 1-2 thousands and some of the ex-owners will agree to pay it. They drop the rest andmioght cash actually 6 digit every month. Just my theory, no proof though !

Argh... didnt know 100% of the drop will get sucked... 5 days grace is a big advantage for the registrars...

All drops are temporarily registered. PERIOD.

They are checked for traffic over 1 to 5 days. closer to 5 days.

Then, you might be lucky enough to grab it.

However, the other traffic checking registrars might grab the name.

I occasionally see names float between 15 to 20 days.

By the way I looked up Chris Ambler and this is what I found at icannwiki.org
