United States: ICANN To Take Up "Wait-Listing Service" For Web Address Re-Registration At June Meeting
29 May 2002

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced that at its June 27, 2002 meeting in Bucharest, Romania it will consider a proposal by VeriSign Global Registry Services (VGRS) to establish, on a twelve-month trial basis, a "Wait-Listing Service" (WLS) for the .com and .net top-level domains that will allow for the re-registration of attractive domain addresses as they expire.

The VeriSign WLS proposal calls for customers to go through their Internet registrars to buy WLS subscriptions. Verisign, as the operator of the dot.com registry and global wholesaler of dot.com addresses, would provide the service to the registrars at a wholesale rate. "It’s really about bringing order to the chaos and giving individuals and small businesses a chance to get the domain names they want," said VeriSign spokeswoman Cheryl Regan. "The current system really favors the speculative market."

Criticism of the VeriSign WLS plan comes from some Internet registrars who want VeriSign to charge a lower wholesale price for WLS. The current VeriSign proposal calls for a price range of $24 to $35 per WLS re-registration. "The price is our major concern," said Peter Girard, General Manager of Afternic, the after-market division of Register.com. Registrars still do not know what price the market will bear for WLS and are concerned that they will not be able to turn a profit on the service.

Why This Matters: Wherever the price is set, and whatever procedure is settled upon for the proposed 12-month try-out period, it is in the interests of domain and brand owners to institute a rational and reliable system for domain name re-registration.

"a rational and reliable system for domain name re-registration. "
Are you kidding?!
It'll be the same as it is now, only difference that now it's WLS subscriptions that the big players are going to catch and resell.
Even harder for normal folks to get hold of a decent name then.

It is interesting to read the continual drivel from Verisign and Snapnames in support of WLS - telling us how much more fair the WLS will be than an open competition. Such self-serving nonesence is so transparent - I can't understand why anyone would buy into it.

If you want to play in the dropped name market in a serious way, you need to own access to the registry services. There are many ICANN accredited registrars now who purchased their credentials in order to play. It's called capialism. If you want a socialistically controlled domain registration system, don't expect to find it in a capitalist country.

If you want to be #1 in dropping domains, become an ICANN accredited registrar and pay to access the registry Don't think that is fair? Think again. No one is stopping you from playing with the big boys. It costs too much money? So does owning a major sports franchise, or buying my dream home on Maui. Not fair? Sure it is.

Think WLS will be fair? Think again. Name one "fair" monopoly. I can't. The WLS is a monopoly, clear and simple. Snapnames were invited to play so they would not have a legal case against Verisign when they were forced out of business. As the major played in dropping names, they were certainly the most likely to sue. WLS approval will likely result in another class action suit against Verisign - and possibly ICANN should they vote to approve in spite of their constituency being clearly in opposition.

24 to $35 for a database entry?

Give SnapNames some cookie crumbs so they can pitch WSL and make it look legit?

(It is funny to read the Snap report, never anything bad about VeriSign)

So now there will be a NameWinner or any other name grabbing for deleted WSL?

Do most people know that many registars have an auto-renew feature? As long as your credit card is good then your name will never expire.

Sell domain names on Ebay?

VeriSlime has really become desperate because they are failing in the domain name business.

I agree, Verisign was slimed so bad by all those rogue registrars uncutting the market with ridiculous pricing and lending their RRPs to rogue expired name grabbers in shifty under-the-table deals they had to do something or become Verisad.

The tables are turning on corruption.

Bring on the WLS!

Mole!

Bring on WLS!

RacerX will leave the 'big guys' and SpeedRacer in the dust with WLS. Ole #9 will be at the finish line with Trixie, Spridle, and Chim-Chim.

WLS will be the end for the ripoff enom and the other corrupt registrars with their outrageous price gouging. Good riddance!

Go-WLS-Go!

Hmm - Mole, i guess you do indeed have like a $100000 that you are going to spend on WLS subscriptions on day 1 of the WLS?
Because if not i don't get it why you seem to look forward to the WLS.
Be assured the big guys gonna reserve ALL worthy subscriptions on the first day.
Which means you'll get nothing.

What do I get now beatz? Ultsearch and Buydomains with direct access to the RRP with non-descript low-traffic registrars? I have personally lost too many domains to Ultsearch and Buydomains to suggest that the system is above board.

Between the devil and the deep blue sea, I'd take WLS anytime.

I'm just green sick of all this insider trading.

$100,000 divided by $75 per WLS slot means that a mere 1330 domains will have WLS subcriptions out of millions and millions of names. This is a spit in the ocean.

Also too, buydomains and ultsearch are not stupid enought to throw $100K to the wind either. The big boys HATE WLS because they are going to lose their A**es to it. If they were so inclined to plunk down 100K, and that, only lock up a mere tiny fraction of names, they would not be so vociferous in their protest against WLS. Get a clue.

{BTW, RacerX is on to a buydomains scheme on domain drops. WARNING to buydomains: Knock off the scam NOW. We know what you are doing, and you know what we are talking about!!}

Just remember to bookmark these posts when you guys are back here whining about how the WLS has cheated you out of all the best domain names.

If you think you can't play now when their is competition for every dropping domain - and new competitors can enter the marketplace just by becoming ICANN accredited - you will not even be in the same playground when the WLS goes live.

$100k to play? Get real. The guys who win with WLS will spend millions to get their hands on the interesting names. This may drive the price of domains up in the process - but you won't be selling anything interesting if you expect to pick it up in a drop.

I'm already whining thewitt - perhaps its just a case of cutting the nose to spite the face. The success rates of UltSearch and Buydomains are unbelievable, taking even many of my non-descript names in the insider grab.

If it becomes true that WLS will not be a totally randomised round-robin, then let them bleed money for other people's trash. Right now, I would bet their ROI is pretty high. Let it sink to the pits. Insider trading is despicable for the honest small player and webmaster, to say the least.

a million dollars. That is only 13,000 WLS subscriptions. Again, a drop in the ocean. This idiotic thinking that the 'big boys' are going to throw a million bucks into the wind for a return of a few domains is moronic: There is gold in dirt all over the world. That doesn't mean though it is economically feasible to mine it. Get an economic clue here. The 'big boys' are not going to spend 10 to get 5. You know it and we all know it. Enough of the sobbing and crying over WLS. The biggest crybabies are the registrars that are currently soaking suckers for hundreds and thousands of dollars on either 'club ripoff' or 'auctions'. Get some spine people.

As for WLS/current situation:
Sure the situation right now sucks for the small guy BUT at least there is a chance to get some decent names.
Actually i have found a way now to at least compete with Buydomains on some names and to beat Snapnames anytime - so for me that means stuff IS possible - but it won't with WLS...especially for the average guy.

Sky-is-falling chicken little attitudes don't fly.

Chin up!

WLS now and forever!

Just because there are millions of on-hold domains doesn't mean there are millions of *good* domains - and its the good domains that people whinge and moan about not being able to get.

WLS will just be a change of venue for the same players, despite the "optimism" of the hopeful.

My money is on the big players, they've proved they can game the system before and they'll do it again.

In the meantime, the rest will just sit there wide eyed wondering what just hit them as the decent domain game gets sewn up right in front of their eyes.

Big players - now and forever.

Thats what i mean by "optimism of the hopeful".

The WLS will not be a leveller, it is not your ticket to the big bucks. It is just a venue change.
