YourTLD.com offering your own extension.. how is this possible?

How in the world is this possible?

YourTLD is claiming to offer your own domain extension for just 12 bucks. Is this just a big scam? They are making extensions like .family, .inc, .tech etc... all available for registration through their site when those very extensions are already used by new.net. I wonder what ICANN would have to say about this.

Just another alternate root provider probably. Just because they sell them doesn't mean anyone can see them. At least new.net has a few large ISP's set up to access theirs. It's likely this company just uses plug ins, special browsers, or the like. It would appear you will only see their domains if you set your DNS servers in your browser to use their servers. I would imaging they will disappear just like most of the others within a couple years. or months.

I second that. The only thing more prevelant in this biz than a bad domain-name is a bad business plan. (bad for the purchaser)

ICANN has no control of any of these, since they're all independent of ICANN; as far as ICANN is concerned, none of these "alternative" TLDs actually exist. So you have no recourse from them if duplicates turn up between different sets of alternative domains.

Yes, ICANN wouldn't care; and most people should care, esp. when it's on eBay ... ;p
