Quite surprsing since the yellow pages are heavily on the decline from what I understand, and some people predict their demise soon as a Google search is so much better and easier.

Indeed a great sell... if they were smart, they would use YP.com in a rebranding strategy. The term yellow pages is all too branded around that cumbersome yellow book. I would take YP.com and come up with a catchy slogan that doesn't hinge on yellow or a physical item.

YP.com... we'll tell you why!

But then again, I'm not a CEO of a multimillion dollar company. Not yet at least.... MUAAAAHHH!!!

Super sale.
However, I'm guessing much of the value was in the site that accompanied the name.

"29-Dec-2008 Annual Report

Sale of YP.com - domain name

On November 5, 2008, the Company and YellowPages.com LLC (the "Purchaser") entered into a Domain Name Purchase and Transfer Agreement pursuant to which the Company agreed to sell the Internet domain name "www.YP.com" to the Purchaser in exchange for cash totaling $3,850,000. Our primary source of ongoing revenues is the sale of Internet Advertising Packages, which targeted users of our www.yp.com property. We are in the process of transitioning these customers to advertising on LiveDeal: Target local, online prospects, generate quality leads and continually optimize the process to create a high value marketing solution and are hopeful that any loss of customers resulting from our divestiture of www.yp.com will not be significant or adversely impact our future revenues. However, certain customers may cancel their service in response to this transition, and there can be no assurance that such cancellations will not have an adverse effect on our financial condition or results of operations."

Isn't yell.com short enough for them?

Thought this might have been bought by the Yorkshire post

Same here as I've never heard anyone refer to the Yellow Pages as "YP".

Personally I think YP sounds stupid. Not a good choice at all.

It sounds like Why Pee?

it might sound like Why Pee but it will be branded as an abbreviation of Yellow Pages... so why would anyone associate it with urine:)

'YP' is colloquial for 'Your Problem', as such the site could easily be marketed as:

.....'YP.com to solve your problem'

or possibly

.....'Search for answers on YP.com'
