Hi Everyone,

Apple iPad chip designer Imagination Technologies to bring 3D graphics to mobile phones

Imagination, which designs graphic and video chips for most of the world's handset makers, also announced a deal to bring cinema-quality 3D graphics to the next generation of mobile phones.

Hossein Yassaie, chief executive, said the $27m (£17m) acquisition of San Fransico-based Caustic Graphics would bring "Avatar-style graphics" to TVs, games consoles and mobile phones within the next few years.

"Today, 3D graphics don't look like the real thing," he said. "But Caustic's technology is different – these are photo-realistic images."

He said the technology, which has converted "ordinary PCs into super-duper ray-tracing engines" would have a similar transformational effect on mobile phones. "Once [consumers] have seen it, they will have to have it."

Mr Yassaie said that until now it has been difficult to incorporate such advanced graphics into mobiles because they drain computing and battery power. However, Caustic has developed a low power alternative.

**They better get a move on it**

Hi,

A little recent news...

Nice to see some sales picking up....

HTC Confirms Interest In 3D

HTC recently confirmed that it is opening an office in that area. And now an executive has also corroborated the company’s curiosity about 3D.

“We’ve always had an interest in bringing user’s content to life in 3D,” says Drew Bamford, HTC’s head of User Experience. He traces that interest back to the company’s Touch Diamond handset, which launched in the spring of 2008.

The phone, which ran on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, had a software layer called TouchFLO 3D that incorporated 3D details. Features included a phonebook that rotated, akin to a virtual Rolodex, and music albums that flipped when swiped with a finger. “We built up expertise in rendering content in 3D,” says Bamford.

When HTC moved from TouchFLO 3D to its Sense experience, it “stepped back” from these 3D flourishes, however. The company was also adjusting to a new operating system (Google’s Android) at the time and felt it had a lot of information to absorb, says Bamford. Now that HTC has more than two years of Android experience, it is “well positioned to push boundaries [in 3D] again,” says Bamford. The technology offers the benefit of “accelerating users’ experiences” on phones, he adds.

HTC has already made some forays with recent devices, such as its Windows Phone 7-based HD7, which features “3D animations” of the weather.

HTC may be the most prominent smartphone maker to express interest in 3D, but it’s not the first. Sharp earned the title of first 3D smartphone earlier this month with its ‘Galapagos’ phones, which are scheduled to debut in Japan and come to the U.S. in 2011. Source and links at: HTC

CES 2011: Vudu Announces 3D Movie Streaming

Video streaming site Vudu has announced that it will start offering a 3D movie streaming service very soon. Speaking just ahead of the CES 2011 event, the organisation will be the first company to provide this service.
Mashable reports that you will be able to view the 3D content in 480p, 720p and 1080p resolutions. For the maximum viewing experience a 1080p resolution is strongly recommended. The streaming service has put out the word that they will start filling up their 3D catalogue next week; however no pricing details have been given as of yet.

The bandwidth requirements for 3D viewing is the same as 2D although you will need an appropriate device to stream the film with the 3D TV itself also needed. The compatible devices available are an HDTV/Blu Ray player or Sony’s Playstation 3. Other manufacturers such as LG and Samsung are also offering devices, with a full list being provided on Geeky Gadgets.
