im confused why this question even comes up... how would it even be possible to generate revenue with with undeveloped .xxx domains? people were asking about others "traffic" when .mobi came out... like this was even the point and like they were going to start receiving natural type in traffic.

the main reason people register and speculate with these "alternative" TLD's is for the generic value of the keyword... not because they think they'll start generating revenue on unadvertised, undeveloped domains in odd TLD's... yes most people register way too many of horrible quality and get caught up in the frenzy and overpay - but this talk of generating revenue from undeveloped domains that are not .com and not relevant country codes - who first suggested this? i dont think there are as many newbie domainers thinking this stuff as people on this forum like to suggest. the frenzy is stupid for other reasons..

I agree with mjnels. What did people expect for .xxx? It's just like any other extension that came out after the first original few. There's hype right before it comes out, that's built up by anxious domainers and other people who can possibly profit from them. After that initial rush, it cools off.

I've personally had successful sites with what were considered "low quality" extensions because I've made them into a brand myself and I've added unique content to it. The domain extensions won't magically drive traffic and bring money. Just like everything else in this world, you have to work for it. The only reason generic .com's receive so much type-ins and hype is because they are the oldest. It's been embedded in our minds, and we associate .com with websites.

With the new generation we'll see a bit more variety, with many businesses having resort to different extensions due to so many of the good ones being taken. I've seen legitimate businesses use ".co" and ".biz" and ".info". And as the future nears, I'm quite sure I'll see others too. I'm not going to say they will be successful, because frankly, almost all of them die out after the initial rush, but as long as money is made, no one is complaining (besides old school domainers).

I think the XXX extension pulled out of the gate a winner because of the movie rating "XXX" and the whole relativity thing. It soon died, as dot COM holds the hatchet over the necks of just about any other extension, including XXX after a while. If you think about it, DOT COM in any verbal conversation represents domain names, the internet, web advertising, and just about anything else online. That's why it will always be king. People are used to it. How many conversations do you hear where someone mentions .ORG or .CC or .CO with respect to a popular corporation, successful website or online business? None, is the answer.

Unless a new extension is released that catches fire, and is related to something in the real world that is also on fire, I'm afraid that all of the new domain extensions will go the way of XXX and .CC and .IT and on and on and on. Save your money folks; invest in and keep your COM's!

The registry says there are 200K+ domains registered, which in itself is not a feat, .tel still has got more regs lol.

But only half are provisioned in the zone file.
So one half of .xxx is totally dead, just reserved domains that don't resolve.
As for the other half, my initial survey indicated that 83% were parked to a registry placeholder page. The figure should have improved a little bit, but no matter how you look at it, the figures are appalling.

.tel was released March 2009.
I am not familiar with .tel prices but the registration and renewal prices for a .xxx suggests that the TLD was not designed for mass registration.
You are going to have to compare revenue and not domains registered.
Also nobody is going to build the family website on a .xxx.

People have very high expectations of such a new TLD.

So who is making money from undeveloped .xxx domains, either through PPC or domain sales ?

I can tell you who's making the most money, "I C MONEY

ICM's Market? Businesses protecting their brand and bottom feeding domainers.

if you consider cuddling with your partner perverted, well...i don't know what to say.

I didn't realize cuddling was a XXX act until now, thank you for clarifying that

You know very well that in the adult xxx world, the word "spooning" is referred to drinking ****, I wont even say it, it's that disgusting.

It really doesn't matter what definition you want to use, what matters is; "Where is the traffic coming from?" I'm always curious when somebody says a domain using a new TLD is receiving heavy traffic. Here we have a domain under the XXX TLD, and a story about a school teacher spoon feeding children ***** that's been in the news for over 6 months here in the US, and were all supposed to believe visitors are going to the site for "Cuddling"?

:pound:

Good advice that will more than likely fall on deaf ears. If .bozo were to come out, they would invest in it as well.

To the new TLD investor, it's more about making that big score, thinking your smarter than everyone else and registering hundreds of available domains that you think nobody else would think of. And it's a lot more funner too, almost like a easter egg hunt... The 2K to 10K I spend for one dot com at auction is foolish in their eyes, Why spend 5K on a single domain when I can spend 5K on 50 XXX domains that are far more generic? completely overlooking the FACT the TLD has no real value.

Investing in new TLD's and thinking your going to strike it big is nothing but a pipe dream, but to them it's a reality, they have a feeling of "hope" it will take off, despite the fact history has proven that new TLD's almost always DECLINE in value, even the reg fees decline.

When you add up the time, effort and money they invest in new TLD's, the payoff (if any) is miniscule, while domainers who made the safe investment in dot com's are cashing in, and cashing in BIG.

Let them spin their wheels, it's just more opportunity for the wise investor.

who determined it came out of the game "a winner" ??? to me it looked like every other "alternative TLD" launch. what was winner-like about it?

that really has little to do with it. travel is a pretty popular thing in the real world wouldn't you say... well the .Travel TLD hasnt "caught fire."

yeah, cause you cant lose with .COM's... here here, if you were a silly person registering hundreds of crappy quality .XXX domains - no worries - just repent now and switch to .COM and you'll magically start making money. you need no other direction other than my silly chant right here right now :)

i see little wrong with thinking you're smarter than everyone else.. thats how you make money anywhere. just truly BE smarter and not just want to be. cant help but notice the same theme statement again "the safe investment in .COMs".... seriously lets put this in the correct context:

we're talking about people being stupid registering crappy quality strings of keywords in new TLD's... so to jump on over and go, yeah just switch to .COM and you'll be fine - is not true at all. in fact, i'd say its about as haphazard as going out registering hundreds of mediocre new TLD's...

what? no. spooning is laying on your side behind your partner with your body in close contact with theirs, your thighs wrapped under their butt and it forms a "spoon" shape... its cuddling. it sure can lead to sex because of the position, but its definitely not whatever you're describing.

OMG!!! Spooning??? Drinking ***???

Well, not saying you are not an expert in that area but no, precious...that is not the definition of spooning. Spooning is a position.

Take a look...here is picture after picture of images from google

Oh, my...once more you try to too hard to act intelligent only to fall flat on your face. That must be pretty well bruised by now.

And, once more...this thread has been taken WAY OFF topic by our savior of mankind and all the little childrens in the world.

Sorry, and Ulysses...I did not miss your post and I knew at some point you would be adding to the thread. As usual, developing beats the pants off parking.

yeah i was going to post this. at most it is a sexual position. i have never, ever heard it in reference to what raider claims and I've been in the adult side of online for 14 years.

as for the number of registered .xxx sites, its all misleading. i've never even bothered to activate any of my domains besides the ones i won through sunrise. i wasn't expecting traffic or instant worth. i had my doubts the extention would end up being much but wanted to get a few anyways. however, i have done nothing with them.

Right, but when your not it usually shows on the forums under domain sales.

The point I made is when you spend big money for big a domain, it's a much safer bet than spending big money on a bunch of domains that will likely never sell OR receive traffic.

what? no. spooning is laying on your side behind your partner with your body in close contact with theirs,

Then all the adult sites that relate "spooning" with "sperm", they have it ALL wrong, and the audience they have is actually an audience looking for cuddling, is that what your saying? Like I said before, it doesn't matter what the true definition is, what matters is the traffic and I'm convinced based on this tragic event and the media attention it's received, the traffic to that URL is NOT from people looking to cuddle... If you think it is, your as gullible as the person who registered it.

I don't, I didn't know people actually have a fetish for this stuff until the story broke about the teacher.

Now let me ask you something which is more up your alley than mine; Why would a heavy mobi investor register the .xxx version while the .mobi version is available?

Why Register a $98.00 .xxx when you can register the same domain in Mobi for $8.69? Why pass up that opportunity?

UNLESS that domainer lost all confidence in Mobi, that would be a logical reason would it not?

it would be a reason maybe. not sure what kind of logic its based on..

when .mobi came out i thought it'd be a good idea to register stuff relevant to mobile or that could be in the future.. it got kind of crazy after that with people registering everything and the hype talk got blown out of proportion. top that off with crazy bubble price sales and a newbie domainer boom taking place and voila - a mess!

i think with the rollout of the new TLD's relevance will become even more important to the right of the dot. i dont see the value in banking.xxx

Um, its also called Does the domain fit the extension?

In this instance, spooning dot mobi makes no sense. The same would be true for evangelical dot xxx. Makes no sense.

So you are pretty spot on with the relevance angle.

As always, just because it is available does not make it a good reg.

And, as the tshirts say...spooning leads to forking.

.cc is the ccTLD for Cocos (Keeling) Islands. They have very small population and tried to market it like "credir card" TLD and failed.
.it is Italy's ccTLD with millions of population and registered domains that is the main domain extension used in Italy.

How do these compare to .xxx?

And did somebody say their receiving traffic from spooning.xxx? In light of the recent story where a teacher spoon fed sperm to little children, I could very well see the perv's flocking to spooning sites.

Sure makes you wonder about a person's mental state when their first association with the word "spooning" involves feeding sperm to children.
