Hi

I was wondering if you buy a site off someone what is the best way to transfer the site and domain to reduce the downtime e.g. with nameserver propagation.

Do you:
Copy the site files onto your server.

Errr...now what do you do about the DNS and nameservers ? Which order.

Thanks for any help / advice.

well, I normally copy the site to the new server, and test it.
If everything is ok, the DNS will be changed.
The downtime is minimal.(a few hours max)

If you have a decent amount of control over your DNS records, before beginning your move, change your TTL (time to live) down to a low setting such as 10s instead of 1800s... then when you change the target servers in your DNS records, they will refresh faster...

Leave the existing site on the old servers during the move, and you should experience very little to no downtime at all.
