Of course, who the "best registrar" is is a matter of personal preference.

For me, I used to think it's Go Daddy. But I'm transferring soon and will give
feedback on the new one after about 6 months to 1 year, we'll see.

FYI: EV1Servers.net, an OpenSRS/Tucows reseller, is doing $6.49 per name year.

"Best" in my opinion depends on more than just the price.

Ease of management of domains is important, especially when there are a lot of them.

Quality of support is also very important.

Some people require additional services such as redirection, e-mail or hosting.

I suppose "best" at any one time will be the registrar that gives the optimum balance of these three factors, plus any others.

I have used Godaddy.com, 000domains and enom.com, and they have been, or are, all "best", at least in some respects.

Of course, they are not the least expensive: myvaluehost.com, for instance, charges only $4 (limit to 10 per registrant); but since EV1Servers (a.k.a. RackShack) is using OpenSRS/Tucows, their backend is simply the most reliable in the industry. ;)

This question is asked frequently and it is always a delight to hear about registrars offering registrations for less than cost price
IMHO , preference for a registrar should depend on what you want to do with your domains and what kind of domains you hold
Any high value names should be held at a $6.95 moniker account for the extra security they offer
Those looking to turn over names quickly should consider a $100 PDQ combined with an Enom $6.95 resellers account. ( Guess who has one for sale) It is so easy to get a newbie to sign up on your resellers site and push the name to them. Often the name buyer will reg. more names at enom giving you some residual income
GoDaddy has great specials and some have had success with their WWD $100 resellers page. Beware that it can turn out to be near impossible to push a name to a newbie with Godaddy or WWD though because it requires a pull through a maze of extra offers. You may end up signing up for the buyer which is just to the right side of legal
On the other hand if you are into developing sites you might consider using a company that specializes in hosting and offers bargain basement registration to combine with their hosting offers
If you don’t need DNS changes , URL forward , email forward etc then there are some other reliable registrars offering great prices
The most important thing is to ask here in the DNF if a registrar is OK
I learnt that lesson the hard way when I got fooled by cheap prices at a dot com registrar in Perth Western Australia. Had to cancel the credit card and request a court hearing to get out of that fix.
There are countless other stories of non responsive registrars
One last thing to remember is the method of payment to the registrar
Your preference for method of payment may vary according to where you live.
Paypal is great for me not so good for others. Some registrars will even take a check/cheque
My personal preference is to avoid using a credit card at all cost. This avoids unwanted future charges and cuts down on my international banking charges

Hope the above helps someone

Most of my names are with directi and I'm happy with the bulk of them there. In my opinion, each one of the registrars mentioned here are good, and offer a great level of overall reliability in domain name management.

Directi for the ease??! You can't even pay them for a renewal on line! They have a support system that requires an entirely separate account! If you get a reply about say, wanting to get a transfer code it is liable to be 12 convoluted steps long. I lost widgets.us and tech support.us as I wasn't able to figure out much else to do but to try to catch my own dropping names. Actually as much as not being able to figure out, it really wasn't worth many hours of time. I recently lost soundofmusic.NET and two other formerly $60 domains to Buy Domains as I couldn't log into a SignNames (their dealer or cheap division) as they had changed my account number since SnapNames had sent me my log in info. Trouble was that there was no way to change my e-mail address to [email protected] from [email protected] and I had sold my legacy 'Halls.COM' domain. To me, perhaps, they win the absolute dregs award. If they were a McDonalds franchise, they would have their franchise rights revolked. They are an abominable excuse for a registrar!!

Name Scout is another 'winner'. They have a miserable e-mail alias system that doesn't work (for me anyway) and it takes two to three days for them to get rid of it once you contact them. I could never get rid of the e-mail stuff on line even when carefully following directions. Additionally, they delete names TWO DAYS after expiration and then want $175 to retrieve them! My guess here is that as the seemingly prefered Pool.COM partner, deleting domains is actually quite profitable for them. I lost SleepDisorders.INFO with them. I'll buy it back if anyone here has it.

As to likes, Go Daddy and Name Cheap win here. Go daddy has an absurd amount of check out advertising. That is one reason that I like Name Cheap. They don't want to sell you legal services or cherry pop (OK, that one is a slight exageration!); just domain names! I never want to use a registrar who doesn't provide some way to get a transfer code within your user control panel. Dotster isn't bad once they offer you the $7.95 rate but the control panel is miserable if you have more than a few domains, unfortunately.

most registrars are decent now adays.
However, there are a few that are really really bad.

Namescout is one of them.
They doint reply to support questions, and have thus far refused to give me authorization codes to transfer out!!!

Among the top ones are:
Moniker, Enom, GD, name.com (just started using them, they seem great).

Refusal to transfer request is a criminal act! :-( I've never met such things.
