Have you ever been in a pair (or more) of auctions at the same time at Snap or ClubDrop where it was obvious that you were competing against one other person?

I am amazed at how stupid and greedy some people are. I was just in a pair of auctions at Snap on 2 similar .info domains. With 7 minutes to go, the other guy and I were each high on one domain at around $75. The bids were not quite equal, but close enough. I look at that situation and say: "Great, I will get one and I will lose one, so I wont bid higher".

Instead, the other guy starts bidding on the one that I am high on. That strikes me as stupid and greedy, unless the other guy is just plain rich and doesn't care. So, I retaliate by bidding way high on both domains, taking top position. So, this bozo starts chipping away at my bids and prolongs the auction, and he drives my prices up, benefiting Snap, but I made sure that he did not outbid me. Instead of getting one domain for $75, he ends up with nothing. Now, I hope he reads this post and thinks a bit about what he accomplished.

Exact same thing... I let him have a domain yesterday and today I figured he would let me have one. These two domains we were the only ones bidding. Todays drop he poppped one in at the last 2 minutes so we went extended and he paid...more than he did yesterday.

No, you don't retaliate. It's the market at work: prices, demand and supply. That's it. Don't get me wrong, you do need some strategy ... and psychology; but it's still business after all. Don't take it too personal. ;)

I don't take it personally. It is just that I have been in that situation with others and they were smart enough to figure it out. We both won. There are some great strategy games that I have played in seminars on negotiation. In those, you usually learn that cooperation is the best strategy in the long run. Cooperation involves risk and trust.

Uh, Nameslave, that wasn't you I was competing against, was it? Feel free to PM me if you prefer not to post a response.

imagine we are in a room together....

got our bankroll, in one hand and.....

each of us has a flag in the other hand.......

when our name comes up, we wave our flags....

as the price goes up, some flags go down.....

the last flag waving....... gets the domain!

I stopped playing the auction a long time ago so I wasn't me.

He did accomplished something. Since he wasn't able to get the domain name, I think the losing bidder would feel happier that the domain name ended up costing the buyer alot more. A bit evil but that's how most people think UNLESS the two bidders are on the same team.

HiOSilver, that might have been me.

I don't know "your" snap name.

I am a team player. If I know who I am competing against. I cooperate.

Most everyone knows "my" snap name. And, I have purposely stayed with
the one name. Eventhough, I have a number of bidding accts with Snapnames.

I am not that "swift". So, I might have missed the signal of negotiations.

During the last couple minutes at the auction sites. I am usually monitoring a number
of auctions at the same time.

Furthermore, I am not usually emotionally involved in acquiring a particular domain.
(Maybe, once every 5,000 names.). So, if you and I are going after a particular domain
at Snapnames and you really want it. Let me know. (I have done that with a couple
names with a couple of the major bidders.)

I usually aggreviate back when I think someone is purposely tormenting me.
(And, sometimes I am wrong.)

I am sorry if it was me yesterday.

Then, it was me.

I just looked. I had 15 names at snapnames maturing yesterday.

I won 7.
And, lost 8. I guess 2 to you.

Sorry about that.

That is the first time we bumped heads.

Had I known. You could have had both of them for $ 61.
Instead of $ xxx.

I guess this is not a good time to ask if I can borrow $ 50. ???

All of this Steven Covey "win-win" stuff is going to make me cry. Maybe the one person who keeps cutting me off at the knees will realize they could save some serious money if they would catch the subtle hints I keep sending.

Well ... to be honest, it really depends on substitutability, of both a) the specific domain(s) and b) the other "buddy" bidder.

I might be the guilty one here. I am JP2 at snap.

Whoever it was, how do you know they were only in 2 auctions? I'm in 5 or more at a time, so there is no way I can get a 'signal'. Most of the time BuyDomains and/or Name Admin is bidding against me, so no matter what deal you think you have made with another bidder, your proxy better be your top bid or you all lose.

Finally... and I've said this before, DON'T take this stuff personally. Look at the first post; the word "retaliate" is used. That's an EMOTION, and you're wasting your money if you think someone else is going to feel retaliated against because you bid more. Not gonna happen. You'll just make Snap richer and yourseld poorer.

Looks like we're all in on this one!

For nya.info and nye.info, two very similar domains, it was all h2surf vs. domainstore2.

So what you're saying is that we need to kick the ass of Mr. domainstore2 :)
