Nice name completely cancelled out by a horrible extension leaving a net value of $0.

PERFECT for a forum!

Only if it is a Western Samoan forum (or casino). .ws is the country code for Western Samoa.

"One of the most recognizable ccTLD's today is .WS with customers in over 180 countries. Global Domains International, the official registry for .WS "Web Site" domains, was just named in Inc. Magazine's "Inc 500 List for 2002": America's Fastest Growing Private Companies. GDI ranked #37 (Thirty-Seven!) out of 500 for the USA nationally, and #5in the state of California! .WS means Web Site and with over 80% availability your customers will get an easy to remember domain name and finally get the name they really want! As I pointed out in the nano.ws thread Sandra, you are DEAD WRONG. GDI is a private marketing company - they have NOTHING to do with the OFFICIAL designation of domain extensions. ICANN does that - and if you will simply taken the time to look up the ICANN extensions on the internet you will see that .WS stands for Western Samoa. Please stop spreading this phony marketing hype that may entice other newbies to waste their money on these domains in the belief that they are buying some official new "Website" extension. That is simply a lie.

GDI has a 12 year exclusive contract to the .ws extension, which is owned by Western Samoa, to whom GDI pays a commission per registration.

Of course, .ws was assigned by ICANN as the country code for Western Samoa, but because of Western Samoa's limited use of the extension and the demand for another internationally recognized extension, .ws was identified as the most suitable alternative to .com, and to stand for Web Site.

The Western Samoan government agreed to this.
So as far as I care, .ws stands for Web Site, for at least the next 12 years anyway!
You, being old school and all, I understand this is hard for you to accept.

.ws was identified by WHO as the most suitable alternative to .com? Why, by GDI - what a surprise!! I know all about what GDI is and what their relationship to Western Samoa is. And the fact remains that GDI is nothing but a private company with no right whatsoever to designate what a domain extension means.

What if the Ford Motor company told you that from now on .com meant "comedy" even though ICANN says it does not? Well I guess if Ford says so it must be true regardless of what the official international ruling body says.

Do you think GDI might just have a vested interest in telling people it means something other than what the OFFICIAL meaning really is? (I see you have already backed off your ridiculous assertion that .ws "officially" means website ). Of course they do, to lure suckers into buying worthless domain names from Western Samoa.

As far as "you" care, sure it can mean website. That's true. You can think rabbit means donkey if you want to as well! The rest of the world will think you are nuts but c'est la vie. :)

Yes we have all heard that urban legend...what is it....473 times now? But let's say it is true. How many times have you ever heard of lightning striking in the same place twice? The sales record of .ws domains is well established. Sales are virtually non-existent. If ONE were sold for a decent price out of 200,000 registered would than mean they must be a good investment? Of course not. You would have a much better change of winning the lottery than making significant money from an undeveloped .ws domain (and I have serious doubts about developed ones as well).

People use the Internet to visit/find a WebSite, thus if they see a .ws Domain in the search results they will think "WebSite" not "Western Samoa"

Using .ws for WebSite makes perfect sence to me, just like using .us as the word "US" eMail.us

thanks for the conversation! But unfortunately i don't want to waste any more time "enlightening" anyone, and run the risk of rubbing them the wrong way.

i'm a regular reader of your Web site, the dnjournal, duke. I think it's really informative!

the member that had the $900 sale left a comment in THIS thread, and the sale took place two months ago.

See ya'll around!
