That's basically my question. I have a client with the perfect name for their business that they do not want to change. The .net is open but the .com is an adult site

Bad can of worms to open?

No his business is not adult and he'll never change the name of his business either. Dilemma :/

I agree, bad idea. There have been similiar situations though, that have worked out okay.

I'd still say it's not a great idea unless it's impossible to mistake or think that it'd be a .com..

Why don't you contact with the com owner and try to purchase that domain. But of course don't mention that you're a company because they will not sell it cheap if they learn haha :)

If he won't change his business name has he considered buying the .com or if he has a common law trademark has he considered suing?

Using the .net for business when the .com is a porn site is a *very* bad idea.

No trademark but I guess I will contact the owner of the .com and hope they're not ridiculous with a price like some of us would be ;)

Use the .net and build on it a christian forum :D

Ha. That would be fun :D

I regged the .net anyway and sent off the email. Now, we wait

Thanks guys (and/or girls!)

If he runs an adult site on it you should be prepared to purchase the site based on his revenue as well as the domain name. Hopefully it isn't very profitable for him.

You are asking a bunch of domainers who believe dotCom is king, what did you expect :) You have to keep in mind that dotCom has been so ingrained in the public's minds through millions in advertising. It's no wonder that there will be a percentage of people who will type in dotCom as a suffix without even thinking about it.

Only thing worse than having an adult site .com, is having an adult site as a non hyphened domain and a mainstream business as a hypenated name.

Case and point:

ugas.com verses u-gas.com

cheers

i'd say .net is bad idea for a business to begin with unless it's an isp etc...I would just look around for avail names with 1 word added to beginning or end of his business name:

businessonline.com
businessinc.com
ebusiness.com
etc...

All things in life should be that simple :D
