Have been actually referring more to graphics rather than photos, again I go back to the issue of if you value it so much why not take a few seconds and embed the 'C' Icon in it.

I would never dream of using such an image with the copyright notice on display. Since most images on the-web are likely not truly owned by the website how can one assume they are in fact copyrights of that website without any actual notification?

For what it is worth, you are wrong, copyright apply since about 1986 by default, no need for a Copyright notice. A picture taken of your house, does indeed have a copyright on it, and a model release is only needed if the person if famous, or the use is commerical.

You will probably reply to this that you do not think so, and since I am just saying it, you will not believe me. It is not worth my time to find the links for you for free though, so how about a little wager, that I am right under US law, and if I provide links to prove it you owe me $100?

That site offers photos for $1.50. It seems quite costly to me for only 1 photo.

Ehh... that's dirt cheap for a license to use the photo on your site(s). Go visit gettyimages or something which will charge 50 times those prices. Stock photos are very expensive most of the times, and I am really happy with a service like istockphoto.com who provides great images for _just_ $1.50

This is simply not true. You need a release from EVERYONE in a commercial use photo.

I put 'or the use is commerical' , what is not true about what I put?
You can use a photo with people in it for editorals, and news sites without a release.

my advice. If you are designing a professional web site buy the images, that way you are protected. it will save you hassle and money in the long run ;)

trader: if you are a legit news organization, it is not a problem to take a crowd shot or even individuals in a crowd during the course of an event. you take that same shot of an individual in a crowd and saythat he or she endorses xyz brand beer and use it in a commercial, or use it in a negative manner you could be sued unless you have a release.
copyrights have to be respected--photographers as well as domaineers have a right to earn a living from their work.

That copyright claim may sound valid since it was his photo, but would fail in court, IMO, perhaps I am wrong. Why not simply embed a "C" icon to put the world on notice he claims a copyright?

I have little sympathy for those who do not bother with tm or copyright notices, be it on a webpage or an image. I would never publish a webpage without one myself.

a c or even a Copyright , 2004 isn't necessary in any artistic work. Articles I write are copyrighted regardless of me putting a notice at the end or not, paintings are copyrighted , photos, songs, etc etc. You don't see a copyright notice on every photo in every magazine (well almost but not all) so does this mean that these pics are free for you to use/borrow/incorporate into your site? Absolutely not. The creator of the image owns that image PERIOD.

If I work for you and take pictures of you or your house per your request, I own the images but I MIGHT NOT OWN (edited) the rights to use them. With regards an image of your face, I can't use that image unless you have signed a model release and I can't sell that image unless I have been given rights to do so. Also property releases, in the case of your house being photographed are similar to model releases. I can't sell an image of your house unless you gave me permission. . .

Generally speaking the press is given a little bit more of leeway in regards to using pictuers of people or their property without releases. For example: Say you were face was in a crowd at a public event and I used that picture or maybe your house was on fire.

I get sick of cheapskates and theives stealing photography. I hear the arguement "well it's just a photo" ... if it's just a photo then GO TAKE IT YOURSELF and quit stealing an original piece of someonelses creation.

$1.50 per image is expensive ?? you truly jest. Get real !

FOR ONCE I AGREE ENTIRELY WITH JUNIPER ! :p

Personally I recommend Ultravertex.com, a membership based site offering thousands of photos download.

Sorry, but I would strongly recommend AGAINST Ultravertex.com. Please read my other thread about them:

http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?t=40634

And you'll get a free 6-month membership simply by buying a $5 template from Template Monster, who on earth would pay them $9.95?

Moreover, you'll find even better pictures at free sites like sxc.hu.

Thanks for the info, nameslave. Actually, I have been looking around at ultravertex for quite a long time and I was considering purchasing a membership there. But now I will switch to a TM cheap template if needed.

Yes, Morguefile is known to be a good place for free images. But for paid ones, I would still recommend Hemera, even after my special month of subscription is over (downloading some 1,400+ very good images for just $6.99).
