I just installed Google Adsense ads on some of my sites. It is working fine except when someone clicks on an ad it opens the advertisers site in the same window and they are gone from my site.

Normally I can just put a target=new command in html, so when they click an ad a new window would open leaving my site visible underneath the new window. The target=new command is not working though. Do all of you who run AdSense have the same problem, or is there a way around it?

It's against the Terms and Conditions of AdSense to manipulate the code they give you in any way, and from what I've read on other discussion forums, Google is very strict about enforcing this and doesn't hesitate to drop affiliates who can't follow their T&C.

In any case, it's not as if they're leaving for free - you should be handsomely rewarded for "losing" that particular visitor...

Thanks for the info guys. I wasn't trying to change any of their code, just tried adding a target=new tag like I do on all other links on my site and noticed it wasn't working. If they pay well enough that is the bottom line as you noted.

Yeah, thats something that was bothering me too, but its understandable. Advertisers wouldnt be paying as much if window would open in new window..

Duke: What site did you sign up with? I mean, what site did you have initially reviewed for acceptance? Thanks ;)

I used dnjournal.com to sign up and have since placed the ads on brandsplus.com and musicparadise.com as well.

I think you can put a code into the HEAD of your html to make all offsite links open in a new window.

I wouldnt sugest it, google adsense is a great thing and i dont want to see it abused.

I think it wont be like it is now (so lucrative) for long, too many are abusing it and as a adwords advertiser I removed myself from adsense listings.

Opening links in a new window also sucks for the advertisers (me) since the visitor is more likely to not spend as much time on the site. I wouldnt be happy if my adwords adverts were opened like that.
