I've read some comments on .eu here and I'm wondering...in your opinion, in the US, will .eu surpass .cc as far as popularity? I remember a few years back, .cc was "the new .com" but it has obviously not lived up to that billing. I'm not saying .eu will be the second best TLD, just comparing the two.Thanks for replying.

.cc has been 'artificially' introduced by VeriSign as a .com alternative (the same with .tv although it has much reliable connotations). .eu has got a good natural background (geography, business, no of citizens, etc.). I'd compare it rather to .us as a 'continental' extension.

I think .CC looks a bit unprofessional ; it may sound a bit like .COM but it is not .COM and anyone who knows what .CC stands for will find it unprofessional for a website not orientated to the Cocos Islands. Others may think it's a typo and type the .COM variant in their address bar.
I'd go for .EU which in my opinion is a very promising extention. However, unless you're a US citizen with European roots or unless your company has business links with Europe, I'd say you should leave the extention to the actual Europeans. Same goes with .US, which should be left for American citizens, American nationals, and business units in the US.

I can't see .EU gaining much if any popularity in the US. CC works pretty much for credit cards and not much else imo. Where some large European companies use the .US extension for their US promotions, I can't see US companies doing the same thing when doing promotions in other countries. I'd think they would go with the ccTLD (such as .DE) for each country instead.yenyob said:

what does CC stands for?most People dont even know if CC exists but at least people know that EU ( european union) exists and its getting bigger and bigger so i dont think they will be surprise to hear EU has their own domain extension just like that of its currency

Yes, actually VeriSign is the registry for .cc too so it's no wonder they would promote the TLD.hookah said:

Saying that, I think .us & to some extent .eu have a bright future.
The TLD for the USA is not .com, it's .us. It IS America's TLD.
.eu is a supernational TLD and most European countries are used to their own ccTLD so we could live without .eu. The main benefit is for the EU institutions who will be able to move from .int to .eu.
In terms of economic and political power Cocos Islands vs EU/US do not compare... .cc is yet another exotic TLD to me but there are many worse.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean consist of two flat, low-lying coral atolls with an area of 14.2 square kilometres (5.4 sq. mi), 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) of coastline. People in west Texas have homesteads bigger than that.
I think a big factor in the future of many extentions is the fact that .com is the default extention in most browsers. When or if browsers start checking for multiple extentions when you type in a name or phrase, things could change drasticly. Dot eu over cc by a mile and dot com uber alles (at least for now).

To answer the original post, .eu and .cc are both not great as far as popularity goes in the US. You're much better off with a .com .us .net .org .biz or .info. Americans can't even buy .eu unless they have some connection to Europe. .cc is available to anyone but not a popular extension. Even though .cc is really a country code domain, it's been marketed as a .com alternative and many registrars feature it when you do searches for domains, so it has some visibility. To ask if .eu or .cc will be more popular in the US is almost a question not worth asking. If you had to choose between the two, .cc would probably be better since it has no restrictions on registration. I've always thought .cc is a nice looking extension too, and there have been some .cc sales of $1,000 to $4,000 lately. If anything .cc is slowly gaining more popularity, but I think it's because of it's affordability in the aftermarket. A good .cc keyword can be gotten for a very reasonable price.
