The value is close to zero even if it didn't have the hyphen. Can you still get a refund? This name is flat out worth zero. Don't let these dreamers tell you that it might be worth something if it was developed, as that is not relevant, since "if developed" it would now be a business.

There are some names that actually have value because they are easy to develop, but this is not one of them. Imagine standiing in line at lunch today and there is a beautiful lady in front of you. You make small -talk, and she asks you what you do. You tell her that one of the things that you do is buy and sell domain names. She seems interested and asks you what you most recent buy was. You tell her... Chicago Hyphen Area.com. No date for you.

In a fair world, you are not supposed to be able to make money by registering Chicago-Area.com. It can't possibly be the insight that is needed to make it. If life were this easy then nobody would dig ditches or work at McDonalds.

When you think about registering names like this always ask yourself what your advantage is. What did you bring to the table that 6 billion other people couldn't see that allowed you to spot value in this name?

the domain without the hyphen would be poor, because it's incomplete.

incomplete, in that there needs to be a subject after "area"


area is not needed if you type chicago


but a domain like "chicago area restaurants", may be valued higher.

if you actually developed a "directory", based on that premise, then that's a valid model


as the value of the domain would increase with the popularity rate of your site.


though for each "subdomain" you create, you must reg/protect each typo



ie: dogtrainingchicagoarea.com and dogtrainingchicago-area.com


i prefer to subdomain to the right of the .


ie: chicago-area.com/dog_training.html


less concern about typo protection

imo...

To answer the question,

the hyphen is not bad for search engines if the site is developed but killls most typin traffic chances.

I appreciate the helpful information. I am a dog trainer, and buy a lot of domains with the intention of having them refer to my primary site (dogimprovement(.)com)
I own "ExpertChicago.com" and "InstructionChicago.com" and thought they might make good directory sites, too. Plus then I could push my business even more, provided they two sites were successfully developed.

Anyway, I'm not so great at all of this and do appreciate the feedback.

the hyphenated version is 1% to 0.1% of the value of the non-hyphenated one, if not less.
You can always use the double hyphen. it only costs reg fee.

don't think geo(area) is a huge exact

so the problem is keyword geo (area) who searches that way?

now

keyword.geoLL.com where the LL is a state abbreviation

the LL should be ignored by google in exact match value and chicago is in the level 3 prime exact value hit zone

keyword subs are level exact value hits

forget the /keyword directory suggestion, irrelevant to goog's algorithm scores

so you on the right path, subs with a GEO

Cgeo.com (1 character prefix geos are gold in goog's algorithm) or geoLL.com where LL is state abbreviation

all development gold

due to high value of sub keywords

are all exact value high scores with only the keywordgeo.com 'maybe' being better

since google is now redoing serp's to favor any high value GEO match on maps

GEO development is poker red hot now in SEO circles

keyword.Cgeo.com or keyword.geoLL.com

can you put the -area on page 1

sure, but as soon as you do it's easy to knock it off

so why bother

if you want to do this type of development in CHI town

find a better geo .com for chicago

even a C-geo.com or geo-LL.com is better

area not a great search term for sub development IMO

and that's what I do

so reg fee for the -area

but GREAT IDEA

now you know the types of domains you need to do the sub domain idea

Cgeo.com or geoLL.com (LL state abbreviation)

so now the GEO is a near perfect exact geo match and the keyword is in high value position (subdomain)

you use directories as suggest

forget it

you get ignored most of the time and someone with a subdomain can knock you off fast
