At 11, we know nothing...

At 21, we think we know everything...

At 31, we learn how little we know...

At 41, we feel we're getting somewhere...

At 51, we think we know everything, again...

...At 61...we realise that a hundred years from now - none of it will matter a toss to any of us, anyway...:)

It was ever thus...:D

.

On the nail.

Lighten up, ShyteKicker....:)

My post was just a fast, off-the-top-of-the-head, light-hearted, little bit of fun.

I'm sure you know all there is to know about today's 15-25 age group...and, they have it tough....and, you think they're DOOMED...

But, lemme tell ya...

The Great Depression 15-25 year olds...the WW2 15-25 year olds...the 1960's 15-25 year olds (Vietnam)....the 1970's 15-25 year olds (Vietnam & oil shock recessions et al)....and every other generation of 15-25 year olds found it strange, tough & confusing.....Its part of the deal of growing up, and finding out how things work.

...but most made it through.

You're a bright guy....I have no doubt you will, too....:)

PS...Amazing 'tho it may seem, everyone over 25 was 15-25 years old once....LOL

Anyway- back on topic.

I heard from one Chinese registrar that only id is required as it looks like they may be providing the "company" local presence as happens with other countries, anybody else hear this?

I have asked relevant questions and currently awaiting reply.

Yes, and that we should all read and learn more before commenting like an angry 21 years old. Oops!

Anyway, like I posted on the other thread, this crackdown is more about porn and illegal download (and to a smaller extent political dissent as always).

And yes, to a way much smaller extent, because political dissent that is totally out of the line has NOT been a serious concern all along since it RARELY happens. For those who don't care to read the news (I mean first hand, up-to-date news), the new generation of Chinese activists are really smart, and know how to steer their way through bureacratic hurdles and political traps. That is why MANY organized protest esp. in big cities are NOT being cracked down.

.

Thye took don one of the major download sites but the biggest one is still up and running. Also the biggest adult sites in terms of traffic (international not local) are also still up. Local adult sites have been taken down aggressively.

As for the "proxy" service, I am sure some registrars will offer it, but rest assured any slight problem with your domain, and it is gone. I guess in many cases you might be able to use a proxy, but the registrar will control DNS.

Now, THIS is breaking news. Just got this from OpenSRS, but I guess it applies to ALL:

Hi there -

We regret to inform you that CNNIC has announced an indefinite suspension all .CN registrations from overseas Registrars, including our registration provider Neustar.

As a result of this action by CNNIC, we have no choice but to suspend new .CN registrations through OpenSRS. We are in the process of disabling new registrations and we expect to have suspended registrations by end of day today, Tuesday, January 5th, 2009 (EST).

Please note that renewals and transfers will continue to be supported.
Availability checks for .CN domains via the API and Reseller Web Interface will continue to work, however, orders for new .CN domains will fail.

CNNIC says the suspension will allow them to implement a better methodology to verify registrant information from overseas registrations. You will remember that in mid-December, CNNIC put into place new requirements for supporting documentation required to be submitted with new registrations.

There is no timetable for the resumption of new registrations. We'll keep you posted as new information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Adam Eisner
Director, Domain Services
OpenSRS

wow, this is not good for the overseas registrars. Local registrars might gain a few more resellers.

Saw that on another forum.

Not the best news but businesses in China will still need a good name to compete in cyberspace.

Advice needed. I have just 1 .cn name which I have been renewing (reluctantly) for the past 6 years which comes due again soon. It's a defensive registration with little traffic.

Do you think the new .cn restrictions will make .cn's less valuable. Help me decide about renewing it since I am weary paying for it every year.

If it's not making it's keep, or not likely to, then drop it but it's hardly a lot of money to keep it?

There's one chinese registrar, i forgot the name, but when i registered a .cn and made my payment via Paypal it gave an error. To make long story short, i was scammed.

I'll be back to name that registrar.

at a price of $6-$8 for .CN (or even cheaper), I think you should be able to afford to renew the domain.

idn.cn is what (at least) a few of the posters are referring to.

Those are $30+ each annually, but you essentially get 4 domains for the 1 registration...traditonal and simplified Chinese as .cn and .cn(idn).

The Chinese government is just being ...the Chinese government. Seems they are going to know who controls the content behind domain names and those people fully understand the "rules". Did anyone expect less?

What is the name?

If the name is not a less then LLL, NNN or not a platinum one-word domain, you can drop it without thinking. IMHO

Btw, .CN domain grace period is one day now, please note that.

I have been dropping 100s of domains which don't earn their keep. Easy to do what with revenues being down so much over past few years. Just 1 more to renew is not the issue since if you multiply it by all those low value names I have marked as non-renew it adds up to a lot of money saved.
