It's exactly the case for ASCII.coms. The majority of domains go to who? Domainers. The only ASCII domains that have true "million dollar values" were registered over a decade ago. The rest is just speculation as to what "might" sell. If it weren't the case, then there would be no such thing as a "bubble" in this industry.

Majority is a hell of a lot different than 99.99%. Not quite exactly.

Well considering 99.99% was pulled out of thin air. We'll call it even.

There are thousands of IDN sites being used by locals all over the world. The only difference? ASCII.com has matured and IDN.IDN hasn't even begun.

If I did not own a single IDN, that would still not change these statistics on most common languages:

1. Chinese (1.1 billion)
2. Hindi (360 million)
3. Spanish (340 million)
4. English (322 million)
5. Arabic (206 million)
6. Bengali (180 million)
7. Portuguese (180 million)
8. Russian (167 million)
9. Japanese (127 million)
10. German (95 million)

You guys cry for the people that use funny characters appearing like you are truly concerned that the Internet is not complete for them. Fact is those people are doing fine without buying your IDN.coms.

This point has been proven wrong, time and time again. Hell, China just about split the root over trying to get their language to work online.

Circles, Circles, Circles.....

If I recall correctly, the number of parked pages in dot com were 45 million, about 1/3 of all registered dot com.

That is a shitload of parked pages.

There is none of this "you guys" mentality.

This is simply a bit of news that IDN.IDN is going to happen.

Now, I hand regged my first IDN perhaps 4-5 years ago. Still have it. Yes, it does get traffic.

Now if someone is *****ing and complaining about getting ripped off by someone selling them worthless IDN, then that is obviously not an area they should get into. Why invest in something without knowing a damn thing about it?

Hell, China just about split the root over trying to get their language to work online.
Something I still look for them to do.

Yeah I'd say you have motivation to hype IDN.

What kind of revenue do those puppies produce?

I have no motivation to hype IDN.

I do have an interest(s) in other countries, other languages, other cultures.

I grew up speaking French and English, I was raised in Catholic schools were Latin was mandatory, which enabled me to quickly pick up Spanish and Italian.

Saying that everyone has been fine with the internet up to now is saying there was nothing wrong with the rotary phone and remington manual typewriters.

How much do they make? Enough to pay for themselves in renewal fees over the years.

I am not "hyping, pushing, selling IDN's". I am acknowledging the fact that there is about to be a new form of internet. And I am also acknowledging that there is going to be massive confusion and there is a risk of all of this segregating the internet.

As for how much one of them makes, is two cents too little when people on the forum are *****ing about only getting a penny a click on a dot com? Is $16.00 not enough when I have some dot com's getting over $30 per click?

Point is, if you are against it then you are against it, and against any rationale for it or acceptance of it.

I have to admit you did hype mobee a lot more than IDN.
I believe in mobi.

I believe in its value and usage to represent what it is intended for - mobile internet.

I believe you can make any site mobile but only one extension says it is mobile.

I was not so much hyping mobi as I was shooting down every argument against it.

Those arguments seemed to parallel the same arguments for IDN -

I don't like it.
We don't need it.

Same arguments with the same results...still going to occur despite domainer's objections.

Once more, with feeling:

Domainers do not control the internet. They just wish they did.

More troubles for the idn investors. The two largest markets, China and Russia, are taking steps to yank all valuable names away from investors.
China just announced that in order to reg or re-new you must provide tons of paperwork. And they prefer companies to individuals.

And Russians are squinting their eyes to look just like their Chinese comrades.

Na zdorovie!

Something I still look for them to do.

I don't think it'll happen. It was just a threat to get Icann off their asses and get the IDN ball rolling again.

China is the biggest economy in the world and only getting bigger. They aren't going to just shut themselves off to the world; not at this point in time. They are taking over. This was purely a flex of their political muscles.

Couldn't have said it better myself. In the first half of next year there is going to be a huge jolt to the Internet as these domains (IDN.IDN) are released. Just saying it's going to happen and I believe in it. It's cool if you don't care, or have a different point of view. (It was actually a pleasure debating with you Fearless.) But the tone of this OP really pissed me off.

Am I invested? Yeah. Isn't that why we are in this business?
Have I sold to native end-users? Yes, I have.
Am I selling right now to domainers? Hell no.

As Andrew Snow put it. "This is 1998 all over again."

Ah the time machine domainer dream enticing domainers to fill registrar's and ICANN's coffers.

They can do what they want. Don't care. IDN.IDN will happen whether you want it to or not.

Later man

China just announced
China can yank all they want...on the .cn. That they control. As for the .com and .net - nyet, they have no control.

Same with the ruskies. If they want to tighten the reins on the .ru, then so be it.

I don't think it'll happen.
We'll see. China boasted about wanting three things - the most domain name registrations [done], the most computers in use [done] and their own internet.

They have used the examples of earthquakes - on land and undersea - and the underline cable being cut by a submarine as reasons to warrant their wanting to control their own internet.

China can also block domain names they want to block. They could dictate that the only .cn names resolve in China.

They have a lot of control.

No doubt this has been a hot button/current issue. It's going to get interesting for Chinese domains. I do believe China want's them all the .cn .com and the .net.

And they are. It'll just make more people come over to .kom.

As Andrew Snow put it. "This is 1998 all over again."

In 1998 we kept our big mouths shut about domain names. We didn't want it getting out that domain names had a lot of value. That would just create more competition in acquiring them. A stark contrast to the mobee and IDN pump and dumpers.

Yes, because looking at my past sales on here would indicate I'm one of those people. In fact, I've done nothing but push my domains in this conversation we've had, right?

My domains are doing just fine. They more than pay for themselves in parking. I do appreciate the concern though. Thanks.

Precisely.

In 1998...
silly me. I was regging names for clients in the early 90's.

And I also recall the number of industry experts who said eBay would never succeed and could have bought their IPO stock at $18 per share. By Thankgiving that same year it was trading at $333 per share.
