That is the first email I have gotten like that. I have a few domains with them from the old school days of domaining. They are really a pain to transfer out of as well.

I work for directNIC, and yes a renewal notice like that is sent 7 days after the domain has expired and the domain has not resolved since the day after it expires. So yes, it is true.
