Hi,

After registering a hundred domain names I have the following to say:

1) All the good names are taken.
2) There is no pint in registering a second rate domain UNLESS you wan to use it your self.
3) You can not make more than $500 even if you sell a second rate domain name as there is somuch choice available for such names.
4) You can sell only 1 out of 200 second rate domains. Whih means you spend $1600 to make $500.

5) Keep this as a hobby, do not make it a passion.

Thanks,
Sreeni.

sgopalam, I totally agree with you. Its addictive. Everyone wants to register that great name and make a fast $2000, but a lot of the time its a waste. Good thing I only have 7 names, I only plan on registering names if I use them or find value in them.

In any industry people will try to make a buck and fail. But that failure doesn't mean every other company within that industry will also fail.

Whether you fail or whether you succeed in entirely up to you and the effort you put in to making it work.

Nobody denies that.

The approach people are taking by registering existing/dropped names is questiionable.

Why, on this very board, people say two different things:

1) Do not register new names, find expired domains

Also they say

2) Dropped domains drop because they are bad.

No true. You can still find good domains that are availble to register. Just have to know what makes a domain good and where to locate potential buyers for them. I have made thousands of dollars just this year of domains that I have found of the deleted domains lists. But it took me over a year to figure out what domains sell. There can be no success without some failures :)

May be you are 1 in 10000.

Do you mind providing a few examples of domains you have sold?

People who say "Dropped domains drop because they are bad." are either talking in very broad strokes or simply don't understand the dropped domain market.

Yes, the majority of dropped domains are useless, but not *all* of them.

Most good names are registered, so "do not register new names" (in general).
Since they are registered, so "find expired domains" (as a general guideline).
Many bad names also got registered, so many "dropped domains drop because they are bad".
But not all dropped domains are bad or get dropped because they are bad, good and bad domains both have chances to be dropped.

I totally disagree with you sgopalam.

U can still get sellable names. I am not sure what "you" understand under a first or second rate name. But in the end all that matters is the profit and loss.

I was never in a situation of having spent more $ buying names than what I earned from the sales, except in the first two weeks.

"we fail" and "other people become successful" are not related, unless "Other people have learnt from our failure(s) and become successful".

sgopalam, not quite. Do not make this generalization just because your sales reflect a negative profit. Speak for yourself. Not others.

Hm............ There are many factors in play here. Nobody mentioned the (bad) economy. I am not saying this is the ONLY factor for the slump but a big one. The other factor is most of the "good" names are taken (this one was mentioned); now for my short theory:

There are about 1-5 good names in every 1000 names dropped. There would 've been more if it weren't for the registrars doing their own alchemy at the mouth of the trash chute. What I am saying is that between the economy, the glut of useless names passing through the gutter daily and the registrars keeping a watchful eye on anything that sounds remotely interesting is making it impossible for some of us the work.

Also, today was a very frustrating day for dropped list pickers. A lot of trash went through today. BUt I think there is only one way to go and that's forward as planned. Our second-rate names may become jewls and unique finds when the craze resumes and the one who waited and paid the extra year for the sack of once-was with cherish once again.

PFew.. I have no clue where this train of thougth came from but it sounds encouraging!

I have registered 11 domain names and I will register on more.
Only one of my domain name is helping me make some money

i.e www.flashcircle.com.

I understood it late that domain registration is addictive.
