Hi,

Just curious if IDNs actually get any traffic without browsers supporting them at this time?

Please share your experiences.

Thanks.

Some IDNs are doing very well, xxx visitors per day.

When IE7 is released and adopted, 100% of online population will be able to type in URL in their native languages, so the traffic should jump at least several hundred times.

Not only IE7 will come with Vista, but it's scheduled to be released as a stand-alone program later this year.

Most of the existing traffic for IDNs are not via type-ins but through search engines. If you get an IDN indexed on an SE and a user clicks the link, it wil resolve even if the user does not have an IDN enabled browser.

In answer to your question I have a couple of IDNs that get xxx hits a month one with a 50% CTR. But on the whole most of my IDNs get 1 or 2 hits a month at the current time and none if they aren't yet indexed by an SE. This is my experience with Japanese IDNs. I believe that languages like French, Spanish, German are doing profoundly better even now with regards to traffic.

IE7 will finally allow users to type-in and it will be released in the fourth quarter of this year (Oct-Dec) as a special security update for anyone with Windows XP (which is a majority of users). Then in January when Vista releases, it will be bundled with that as well.

I'm updating my entry above, I have 2 .jp IDNs that in the first 8 days of this month have each received over 1000 visits with CTR between 15-20%. One of these domains has gotten close to 3000 visits. So yes, I am bullish on IDN future value.

Absolutely.I have about 130,000 uniques a month total of European IDN traffic.Mostly French,Spanish,Turkish, and handful of Swedish and German, spread over 700 names.I don't have many Asian IDN,but I'm seeing an increase slightly on the few I have.
I can't even imagine the traffic once IE7 is fully released

Agreed. IDN.jp (Japanese) and Russian IDNs are by far the best and get a lot of traffic. French and Spanish have always been good, too. Now that IE7 is out, I get better traffic all-around and see more Arabic, Greek, and such.
