I didn't intend to create some kind of ranking of domain conferences, again, some conferences have a slightly different focus.

I happen to like domainfest mostly because I know a handful of people who will be there. Many of them will be at other conferences as well. Traffic isn't bad, but I always liked competition, and Schwartz had a virtual monopoly for a long time, so that makes me like the former underdog domainfest. They've been catching up though - and I am sure Domainfest LA will be great.

Last year I ended up spending the last hours of the night in some interesting bar with 99% african americans, except 2 friends, Frank Schilling, myself, and one other guy I don't remember. Obviously this could happen at any conference, but there's usually enough "smart" and "successful" people with "excellent portfolios" to discuss with at Domainfest. I wouldn't discard domainfest totally only because DS focuses on ppc. Anyway, most "successful" domainers got rich and built their "excellent" portfolios through ppc, and they are still making major money on ppc. For some reason, I get the impression that the traffic crowd will only admit that when they're drunk, late at night. At domainfest it's somewhat easier to talk about ppc. Imho ppc isn't quite dead yet. Google opening up adsense for domains would seem to support that. AFD/oingo landers are even more basic than Domainsponsor btw :)

I'd really like to attend Pubcon as well. Adtech is also on my list. They've got a lot of worldwide events, I'm planning to go to Adtech Singapore.

Since, you buy traffic domains, I would assume ppc is important to you.
Considering your passion for Domainfest, I would also assume DomainSponsor
is your main ppc source.

Yes obviously ppc is important to me, and then it's hard to avoid DS completely.

I hope Domainfest's 2009 domain development theme will be beneficial for you.

I never cared much about formal programs. I will most likely be sound asleep when they talk about development. I'd rather meet people on a smaller scale, than listen to speeches.

Who is Frank Schilling?

I'm not sure who you consider the "traffic crowd"?
I would assume many of the attendees from the past Traffic Conferences will be attending DomainFest.
And, some of the attendees of Domainfest will be attending Traffic.

I get the impression you are trying to break this into distinctive groups.
Like - Democrats/Republications, have/have not's, Developed sites/ppc,
successful/not successful, etc.

I was a major promoter of DomainSponsor and DomainFest for a long time.
But, I having concerns that DS's interest in the future might not be good for
the average domainer like myself.

try a google search :)
hint: he has an excellent portfolio

I merely started a thread to ask who here would attend domainfest. Then you start posting stuff like this:
"If you want to really network with professional domainers, attend Traffic.
If you want to learn development, attend Pubcon and other conferences."
.

I agree with you, there are slight differences in focus. I don't mind that you mention this, it's an interesting debate, but let's stick to the fact, I didn't start breaking this into distinctive groups, you did.

What does DS know about development?

I suggest you take a look at domainsponsor.com and oversee.net

These are nicely developed domain names. They use these developed domain names to drive partners, publishers and advertisers to their business. Quite a few have signed up. Behind these domain names they have built a business with some 200 employees. They generate an impressive cash flow and decent profits with these developed domain names. And you are trying to tell people Domainsponsor doesn't know enough about development? Where's your point?

But, I having concerns that DS's interest in the future might not be good for
the average domainer like myself.

Now that's an interesting concern (seriously :)). I agree, they have their own agenda. I was originally planning to skip domainfest this time, but I just booked tickets and the hotel. There'll be enough interesting people to make it worthwhile, some nice parties (just like you suggested, some of them are going to be private, unrelated to Domainsponsor). And who knows, even if the good folks at Domainsponsor have a somewhat different agenda than me, I might still learn something from them.

Thanks for the update. I was confused how he got all of those great domains.

You are current. You asked a simple question and I slightly "hi-jacked" the thread.

Now that I look back, it was something that was bothering me (Domainfest 2009), I guess I just had to get it off my chest.

I will refrain from commenting further.

Sorry about that.

I would like to put a few faces to names for folk at DNF.

Any chance of arranging a meet up some time during the conference for those who want to? Even if it is a table or two at one of the meals?

Just an idea.

Sure... let me know what you want to do. I'll be in Hollywood at least a day early to hike to the Hollywood sign and do some shopping.

I'm not an organiser, but if you could fix up something, that would be great :)

I was thinking of may be reserving a table or two at breakfast or lunch where those who want to can eat and chat, or meet up at.

How does that sound?

Could do something more ambitious like a a meeting the day before.

Most people know or know what Ron Jackson look likes.
When you see Ron, ask him could he point out " ??? " .

Ron knows Dale. Ask Ron to point him out.

I'm sure Ron would not mind.

Thanks.

Yes. I should be able to pick out Ron.

I was sort of assuming that there would be at least 20 or so DNFers, of which maybe half would be happy to meet up.

Maybe folk know each other already. This is only my second conference so still a bit of a noob regarding who of the attendees hangs out at DNF.

Sounds good.

I'll be visiting some people and hitting the clubs before/after the conference, but it would be good to for alldrop to post some other things to do. The Domainfest site list is DREADFUL, the worst possible touristy locations and overpriced shopping in the city.

Restaurants:
Biso -awesome drinks (like a NY lounge, food is good)

Kamasa- this one is downtown but the best in the city hands down.
Mastros - the best steaks in town. also has a lounge singer/piano player (in Beverly Hills)
Angelini Osteria- great italian food.

Clubs:
LES DEUX
Hyde
HUSH
Winstons
Foxtail
bar Lubit_ch
S bar
Villa
The BRONSON BAR - hipsters spot

Late night grub:
Swingers
Canters
Jerrys Deli

places to shop. you can check out:
Robertson blvd./3rd st.,
melrose ave/fairfax.
Larchmont ave/ melrose

These are a few things off the top of my head.

I'll be attending this event again this year. It was a good show last year, and I feel worth going to again. Of course living in here in LA, 5 miles from the hotel, is enticing too. Look forward to meeting some other DNF'ers there. :)

Airfare to Latvia is really expensive this time of year.

HAHAHA, snick, snick, LA = Latvia?

Well, I have some latvian domains, and they all end with "lv" for the iso 3166 code for Latvia is "LV".

Whats all about this Latvia? Its smaller than one third of L.A......
