Mabey they have been doing it before but I haven't noticed. I let a name expire that I decided I would pick/snap back up when it dropped. It went through all phases and was even in the auctions but they never let it drop. It looks like they don't plan to either and it is even still in my name. Anyone else noticing this or have this happen?

Yeah I was going to put a bid on it at the auction but I didn't want to shine the spotlight on it if you know what I mean. Now it looks like I'm fudged.

Even domainsite is doing the same, they registered some of my names themselves. Removed from control panel(no chance to reactivate) with in 30 days after expiry.

Now I see, Domainsite owns the name :)

Sometimes not manytimes many people let it expire!
By mistake, mistakes do happen but Registrars are like "DOMAIN TRUSTS" where we keep our names in TRUST, when some registrars keeping expired domains to themselves without giving a chance to renew or rerigister when domain drops... huh etc etc, I feel is not fair.

When BANK steals your MONEY where are you going to go :)
Same thing with domains.

I feel I went too long and posted something irrelevant, but nevermind I feel sick about this.

I knowingly let my name expire but decided at the last minute it was worth keeping for the future. I "almost" put a bid as I said but didn't want to shine the spotlight on it in a public auction so I decided to try my luck with it dropping. If it wasn't in it current state it would have dropped but it's obviously not going to now.

Well, they have 2 month of stats for the domains between expiry and drop. And they keep those with traffic/revenue. If I am a registrar, I'll do the same...

early bird gets the worm.....when a domain drops, it should drop.........no one should have access after the delete cycle is over. Those that have done there homework and know the day it is deleting should get the worm. Make it available again to reigster, and first come, first serve.
:-D

You seem to be quite amused with this. So whats to stop all registrars from letting any name drop ever again? What would that do for your business denny? I would imagine it would make it pretty hard to catch names then wouldn't it?

Nothing is going them to stop. Even if ICANN make some rules and they will be forced to let it drop, they will have 1-2 month of traffic stats and they will know which one they should catch back. If I am a registrar, I definitely would do the same. Registrars can not surive with $1 commission per domain regged.

Atleast this way they have to compete along with everyone else.

Perhaps they should have thought about this one before they offered it.

"Atleast this way they have to compete along with everyone else."

And why should they if they does not have to ? To feel doing "fair play" or some gesture ?
This is business, capitalism. Your ideas are more in the socialistic way (in US socialists are called "democrats").

"Perhaps they should have thought about this one before they offered it."

Perhaps they did and the dropping domains is part of their income plan.

Yes but they would have an unfair advantage against us or not? Sorry if this is a silly question but are we compating against them or not. If not, its not fair competition beacuse if it does not have to drop its theirs automatically?

Yes it does give them an unfair advantage and techinically against their accreditation contract if it wasn't worded so loosely. And the new proposed contract is even worse.

Can I ask why ICANN doesn't do anything about Registrar's either catching their own name directly or through a third-party? I am sick of reading because of $$$. Isn't there anything we can do to even the game and prevent other services from automatically receiving a name and auctioning it off? I am new to the game, but this doesn't make sense they allow this to happen.
