Does anyone remember where Duke got his name?
It seems fitting when you read the lyrics.
As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Earl
And if you follow me faithfully
I will promise you peace in heaven above
I tell you nothing can stop me
Oh no yeah baby
Yes I m the Duke of Earl
Now do not question and do not think
Just follow blindly and listen to me
Cause I will lead you to a promise land
If you have faith and take my hand
Uh, that looks like the
King James version to me Doc! For all of the poor souls who missed out on the incredible 60's R&B era, the actual lyrics are:
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Earl
And-a you, you are my girl
And no one can hurt you, oh no
Yes-a, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Come on let me hold you darlin'
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yea yea yeah
And when I hold you
You'll be my Duchess, Duchess of Earl
We'll walk through my dukedom
And a paradise we will share
Yes-a, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Nothing can stop me now
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yeah yeah yeah
Well, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Nothing can stop me now
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yeah yeah yeah
(The song was both written and performed by Gene Chandler)
I have told people the nickname came from the song, but I don't think I ever told them how I got it. It dates back to my high school. While getting ready for football practive each day I would jump up on one of those long locker room benches and stroll down the bench singing "Duke of Earl". My recollection wasn't especially good so I only sang the first two stanzas over and over (as you can see from the lyrics above - that wasn't too challenging).
Some of the black guys loved the routine and started calling me The Duke. The name stuck and whenever I visit my hometown people still call me Duke. The football coach had another name for me (not suitable for print). He caught me doing the routine one day and apparently didn't find it as entertaining as my teammates. I found myself doing some extra windsprints that day. Some people just have no sense of humor.
