How much is the max reasonable length for a .mobi ?
What do you think ? There are still many good names available but are they worth something if their length is too big?

My opinion is 7 letters, except where the letters are the first keypress on a phone keyboard, in which case perhaps 12. Just my own yardstick.

stockquotes.mobi sold for 27K at auction (11 letters) - so noone really knows yet - it would make sense that the shorter the better, but imo it is more about the memorability factor - once entered (or spoken) they can be bookmarked or indexed.

id take ~ ringtones.mobi, dictionary.mobi, transportation.mobi, education.mobi, creditcards.mobi, reservations.mobi, hotelrooms.mobi, restaurants.mobi etc. etc. etc.
all the above are over 9 letters, but who cares?

I wouldnt worry about length too much. I would also much rather have something like creditcards.mobi than gpz.mobi. I'm sure in the future almost all phones will have qwerty keypads and probably voice recognition. Like namewaiter said, a long word will still show up in search engines on the cellphone and can be bookmarked

I completely agree that it really not about lenght its about how catchy it is and how fast it registers.

I don't think phones will all have qwerty keyboards in the future. You will always have the trade off as to how big a mobile device someone will carry to enable qwerty, versus those that want the small form factor. That's unless the human hand changes by evolution on the strength of the .mobi TLD ;)

I think 8 letters would be my maximum. However most of my names are 4 character single words to mirror the 'mobi'.

I prefer shorter names for all extensions, but like a poster noted above there are lots of exceptions where longer names are worth regging. The name has to also be memorable and have a commercial purpose, IMO.

the mass market users of .mobi in the future are the text mad kids of today...and they will have no problem entering 2-3 word domain names using a 0-9 keypad...though i would not go above that.

In China they say the phone is already acting as the credit card. Therefore I will take gpz.mobi :)

Thanks for your opinions guys! It seems there is still much more to harvest in the .mobi world.
