Top ten for "credit cards" is going to be a lot harder than top ten for "african green lizards".

Two huge things: RELEVANT links to your site with good anchor text.

I think it comes down to luck a lot of the time. I've seen sites that look just awful with very little content come in the top 10 for very popular keywords. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense.

Luck has very little to do with getting places well in the SERPs (imo).

The really important thing, content is king.

backlinks, i personally use doorway pages that get listed and redirect to the main site, i hand write usually anywhere from 500 to 1000 and submit them as webpages linked to my root index page, and that redirect to it, this process after the doorways are in place will take 6 to 8 months to come full circle and you have a nice strong page rank

You can buy backlinks on high PR sites which will raise your PR, you specify the link text and the link itself.

This combined with a well put together site with intelligent title, meta tags and good page structure will help for Google.

BUT it will always take time, you can't expect to get into Google's top 10 within a week.

Note as well that buying AdWords can help your site as well.

Overall, expect to put money into it if you're serious about getting into the top 10 for your keywords.

I don't think PR has anything to do with SERPs. It appears that Google loves backlinks at this point from many different sites. I think sitewide links get discounted a bit.

In terms of Relevant links, there has been a lot of chatter in many forums about this but I have found no strong evidence to suggest one link is better than another.

Did that site get a lot of hits? Were the keywords you used searched for a lot?

You'll find that rarely searched phrases can get into the top 10 really easily, say for example it's a small film or a new band then it should be really easy to get into the top few entries.

Mis-spellings are also good for getting up high, but since Google is all about back links, if you have people link to you on certain phrases, then you're going to be pushed up the rankings.

Doesn't Google read from the other major SE's as well, so getting into them is helpful for getting into Google itself.

We've had many sites in the Yahoo top tens for certain keywords, and after a couple of weeks of getting there we suddenly rose up the Google lists.

It helps to be in as many SE's as possible. :)
