IDN's dropping like flies

No confidence in ICANN and Verisign at all. The whole system needs an enema.

ICANN't do a thing. Their latest meeting was like an Abbott and Costello routine.

Verisign last year put forth a concept for aliasing called DNAME but seems it is not getting majority support so far since other options are also on the table.

On a positive note, the only item missing to get IDNs truly "on a roll" is IE7 deployment in China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, etc. That will almost "for sure" happen in (hopefully) early/mid 2008, and should provide the impetus for idn.com, idn.net, idn.jp, idn.cn, idn.biz, etc. etc. to get into mainstream use.

I think DNAME may still be the final solution, and for now they are just doing a painfully drawn out political dog-and-pony show. I have no idea of the percentage of IE7 users in Japan and China - but I can't imagine it will be too much longer before they get up to speed. Once that is done, and once we really know the "official" status of IDN.IDN/IDN.com, that should be the point when the value of these names can really begin to be realized.

http://www.penreader.com is not in Chinese but I really love the flexibility that they offer. This is a rather new release of a product featured in Forbes.com. Plus, they have made this also for .mobi.

Very promising for multilingual applications.

But I would be curious if there is an accurate English-Chinese translation tool out there.

I have a few japanese IDN's, doing so-so.

But the Japanese words in English translation (non IDN) are doing pretty good.

Regarding Chinese; Ton of traffic, poor conversion, so perhaps mini-sites in chinese is the way to go. Although I was impressed with $0.86-$0.88 PPC with one particular Chinese IDN last month parked at ND.

Yeah, that .cn didnt do squat for me so I let it go. I am just getting into the IDN market and still getting a feel for everything and trying to find out which is the best way to go. I have yet to find a .com that gets even a couple typins a day. I am not done though, I am regging about 20/30 a day untill I find a couple of good traffic ones.
If I could just find out what traditional way is the most popular way the chinese/japanese type it would make it much easier.

If you're gonna drop good IDNs at this point with no traffic then you are nuts

Most of mine don't get zip yet... If they all got traffic everything would be gone by now.

Aliasing will probably be the solution for Arabic, Hebrew etc. the "Right to Left" alphabets. They may be the first to take the full idn.idn plunge soon. My guess is that the RTL idn.com will have to be aliased to fit the language or they will have to flip it leftside of the term as .moc :lol: or (moc.)

I don't think you are going to find too many except adult names that get more than a few hits each day. Things should start to pop once IE7 gets mainstream in 2008, and IDNs start appearing in advertising etc.

Sure might be worth holding good generics, geo domains, and dictionary words for a 2-3 year period and see what happens.

"Follow the money". That quote goes equally well for what is going on with IDNs, as evidenced with ICANN 2009 budget which is layered with IDN budgets and planned expenses.

Things are moving along slowly, but still on course for the rollout of idn.idn in late 2008 and 2009. The heavy idn.idn news in Russia kickstarted idn.com typein traffic for Russian. Traffic is still a trickle for Japanese, Korean, Chinese etc. but they are just getting majorly underway with IE7 which will give IDNs browser support. Hopefully the idn.idn rollouts will do the same for those langauges.

Read thru and you will find #1 on their priority list is for 2009 is implementation of IDNs. I think they put $ 10,000,000 in the budget for 2009 IDN rollouts. It's all going to happen, just slower than most would like especially those that have been holding IDN.com names since 2000'.

That is news to me. I have no IDN's at all and do not know much about IDN other than seeing how so many people at places like eBay domains for sale may be confused by idn listings what with the odd characters.

It seems like a new .idn extension could easily ruin values of the non dot-idn domains such as how the introduction of .IN appears to have seriously hurt the old India domains with the old ext such as .co.in net.in org.in etc. If the .idn extension arrives I feel that scenario is quite likely.
