no good idns droppin lately

Only people selling off their unwanted "droppings"
The days of one word idn dictionary terms at reasonable prices are long gone.

Read up on the last two ICANN meetings, things are happening fast.
1) Live tests in the root are running with idn.idn.
2) They have laid the groundwork for protecting idn.com and Verisigns position in the system.
3) Most countries are actively involved and on board to get on with decision making. ICANN has foreign language wiki's going for major languages to take feedback from users.
4) Prediction: next ICANN meeting will be IDN, IDN and more IDN.

Still waiting on IE7 browser support to get rolled out via auto update in Asia.
That should be the start of getting IDNs into mainstream use in a big way.

Protect idn.com how? Not allowing owners of dogs.com to go after the owner of dogs.com in japanese? or giving the .idn equivalent to the dog.com in japanese guy.
So no new landrush for .idn equivalents of .com? Is this finalized?

"ñ" is the only IDN character that matters, everything else is useless , even CHINESE characters!

I agree that the spanish "ñ" is important. Spain (.es) allowed registration of this beginning this October.

But I think saying the others are useless is quite a statement considering populations and native speakers.

Language Approx. number of speakers
1. Chinese (Mandarin) 1,075,000,000
2. English 514,000,000
3. Hindustani1 496,000,000
4. Spanish 425,000,000
5. Russian 275,000,000
6. Arabic 256,000,000
7. Bengali 215,000,000
8. Portuguese 194,000,000
9. Malay-Indonesian 176,000,000
10. French 129,000,000

If I was trying to prove a point, YES I would! Make a believer out of me, post stats of your best generic IDN, it would be interesting to see.

乱交.com (group sex in japanese) Oct 1st to 28th at NameDrive:

409 visits, 128 clicks, 31% CTR, $24.90 earnings

And the stats for months before October have been similar - traffic gradually increasing over time.

Today I just switched 乱交.com over to an adult site to see what it does there.

Bottom line is some IDNs definitely have solid traffic and real value - 乱交.com, my top performer, made me a believer :)

One of my top Chinese traffic IDN's is 上海五星级酒店.com , Shanghai 5 star hotels , which has had 826 hits so far this month but thanks to a low ctr not a lot of income.

Similar names are now 400/500 the last two months and increasing quickly, very encouraging - I forsee an explosion of traffic as IE7 goes auto-update.

So where are you parking these names?

I have a few IDN's making $0.55 - $0.86 per click or better but not getting the traffic numbers. Presently these are at NameDrive.

And how are you optimizing your IDN's?

They are rss feed blog mini sites, but a lot of the content is irrelevant so ctr conversion is probably affected by that.

I have very recently added a Chinese hotel affiliate to five of them, one week has seen 579 view 14 clicks - no sales as yet. :)

Congratulations Ron on your increased traffic and revenue...Also thanks for sharing your stats. Is Namedrive the only provider allowing IDN's?,

I'm kinda glad this thread was brought back to life, because I actually forgot about it, I plan to research more into browser support and I'm sure I'll have many more questions, hope you don't mind.

There was a transcript out that stated that ICANN would not permit any new extensions that are "strikingly or confusingly similar" to any existing tlds. Perhaps to be interpreted...that Verisign would have the rights to the transliteral or equivalent of .com (commercial/commerce) and .net (network) terms for idn.idn. Nothing definate, just reading between the lines.

On a side note, Verisign had put forth the proposal for DNAME aliasing which (might) have been the best all around solution for idn.com. So far other options seem to be more in favor so we will have to wait and see what happens. In the meantime IDN.com etc. are live and traffic is definately on the upswing. IDN holders anxiously await IE7 Asia auto update now pushed back to 2008. :sigh2:

Thanks for posting that. Traffic overall is still at a trickle, but some names (particularly adult) do get a lot of hits. Porn.com in Thai gets over 5k hits per month. Many are reporting a good upbeat in traffic since ICANN started their idn root tests and there was a lot of publicity. The news really sparked the curious to try them out.

Still gotta have IE7 at critical mass for idn to really fly. Thats coming, was scheduled for 2007 but due to some conflicts with various software in Korea, Japan now pushed back to 2008.

HERE'S ONE IDN OF MINE FOR THE LAST 3 DAYS (Nov 1- Nov 3),
"Namedriver" is welcome to verify.

Total of 450 views, 192 clicks, average .06 $ 10.93 for 3 days.

That annualizes as $ 10.93/3 x 365 = $ 1,329.82 in parking for 1 idn.
Saying that...most IDNs have very little traffic at the moment until IE7 get rolled out via auto update in Asia and there is more uptake and awareness of IDNs in general. They are a buy and hold for another 2, 3 maybe even 5 year investment before they really grab value.

I've got the time, and patience, and money to renew. Already seeing an increase. Not stellar, but positive.

When the browsers come up to speed, there will be an increase in usage. But it will take time to get the word out and widespread usage.

The recent trial by ICANN...any early reports or results coming in yet?

Nothing is certain except that IDNs are on their way to mainstream use in many shapes and sizes. They will probably come in the form of idn.ascii and idn.idn. Verisign it appears will control .com, .net and anything "strikingly or confusingly similar" in any language or extension. Verisign last year put forth a concept for aliasing called DNAME but seems it is not getting majority support so far since other options are also on the table.

The various Country codes "might" be allowed their own decision as to aliasing existing extensions to .idn, or keeping them as is, or even creating all NEW .idn extensions. Most of the IDN meetings were behind closed doors in Los Angeles last week so not much news. My take is that ICANN is trying to listen to each coutries wishes and in some fashion please everyone. That may be an impossible task and in the end add years to getting idn.idn online in some languages.

On a positive note, the only item missing to get IDNs truly "on a roll" is IE7 deployment in China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, etc. That will almost "for sure" happen in (hopefully) early/mid 2008, and should provide the impetus for idn.com, idn.net, idn.jp, idn.cn, idn.biz, etc. etc. to get into mainstream use.

Once those take foothold and get popular websites under them, the timetable for idn.idn may not much matter.
