Is domain discovery becoming more valuable than domain registration itself?

Registration is easy. It is almost a utility now. But helping someone find the right name fast, and helping them make a decision with confidence, feels a lot harder and a lot more valuable.

If a platform becomes the place where people do their thinking, their comparing, and their shortlisting, then it may already own the most important part of the user journey before any registration happens.

I'm curious, how do people in China register domains? .. and, how do they do the research? .. what is the usual process?
Registering a domain in China isn’t just “search → pay → done” like most global domain registration services. The first hurdle is real-name verification. Whether you’re an individual or a company, you have to submit ID or business documents, and wait for approval before the domain is actually usable.

But the bigger difference shows up when you want to actually use the domain.

If your website domain is hosted on servers in China, you’ll need ICP filing. That’s a separate step, and it’s mandatory. Without it, the site simply won’t resolve properly on the mainland network. So even if your domain name search shows availability and you complete the domain purchase, you still can’t just launch a site right away.

What’s interesting is that ICP records also became a kind of “due diligence” tool locally. People will actually check ICP filing info to see who’s behind a site, whether it’s legitimate, etc. It’s not something you see in most other markets.

Are you looking to register a domain in China? You can reach out to Helen. She’d be more than happy to help you with it, lol!

Yeah, it does look complicated at first glance

It really depends on whether China is a core market or not.

If you’re just buying domains or building projects globally, you probably won’t run into this at all ;)
