"On a tumultuous Tuesday that encapsulated its stormy history, CEO Konrad Hilbers announced his resignation. Shortly after, Napster's approximately 70 remaining employees were offered two unappealing options: Quit now and receive severance pay, or take one week of unpaid leave, hoping somebody will revive the once powerful file-trading company, sources close to the situation said."

hmmm... Napster.com, the fall of the dotcom virtual companies.

Man, the dotcom extension sure is accumulating a lot of infamous baggage.

I think ICANN did a great mistake by not introducing an extension that will eventually replace dotcom on the catch-all extension front.

I think its time we seriously brought back mass scale popularity for .net, the extension that tries harder.

Yeah you're right, you can also compare it to non internet companies, eg why would anyone want to have "Inc" at the end of their name, think of all the companies with "Inc" in their names which have failed. Eg Enron INC , FINOVA INC , actually I could name hundreds, so "Inc" companies must suck just like sites using ".com". :)

Inc?

Not all countries use inc as their company ending. In fact, most countries don't.

In fact, the MNCs don't call themselves inc to the public. Most times, its just the company name, like Nike, like IBM, like Nokia.

Consumers don't care about Nike, Inc. It is not in their recall set.

They do, however, remember Napster.com, Amazon.com, Yahoo.com as brand names unto itself.

err, napster branded themselves as simply "napster" not napster.com, perhaps have a look at some of their old pages.

Anyway the point was is that its silly to pick on unsuccessful companies who happen to have a dot com address and argue this somehow bodes badly for the extension in the future. Your focusing in on the negative aspects of the extension and avoiding all the positives; which includes the fact that the majority of international businesses use .com.

If anyone was actually using .info you'd see some bankrupticies there too :)

True, but its early days yet, and .info doesn't have that kind of baggage that .com unfortunately has picked up.

End of space invaders :D

actually it is funny, when you look at most failed internet companies; "dot coms" if you like, there most valuable asset on liquidation is usually their domain name :)

forget baggage, .info doesn't have the kind of successes that .com does either.

Napster sold for $8 million,

"Bertelsmann AG will pay $8 million to Napster's creditors, allowing the company to begin its operations again with much of its senior management intact, according to sources familiar with the situation. CEO Konrad Hilbers and founder Shawn Fanning, who both resigned on Tuesday after the board of directors failed to agree on a sale, will return to their posts. "

Cool! I like Napster. It's an awesome internet brand.

Napster needs .com, like most B2Cs. ICANN screwed up everything by not introducing a .com substitute like .web in 2000.

.com still rules with .consumers.
