We are now moving all our domains away from registrars that offer appraising,
because:
In the past two years we had five separate domain sales totalling about $760,000.00 canceled.
The domains in question had each time been appraised using "Scientific
Methodology".
The buyers said that professionals have advised that the domains were far
overpriced.
Lawyers advised that we could sue the buyer and surely win the case.
The buyer could in turn sue the appraiser and probably win the case.
But because of the separate asking prices it would cost us more to win a court case than the domain sales price.

We don't mind about people estimating values.
But we do mind when they pretend that it is possible to do it in a scientific way. Because that is absolutely impossible.

To deal with this phenomenon, we boycot appraisers with warning webs.
Typing in the words Scientific Domain Appraisals in search engines usually show our scientificdomainappraising.com on the first page of search results.
We are also posting this on as many domain forums as possible.
And strange enough, our sales are suddenly increasing ...

No, but your posts are funny as it is clear you never had any domains worth $760K and , if you did, the deals certaily would not have gone sour due to an appraisal.

I in general agree that paid appraisals like Sedo etc is offering is not something a serious registrar/parking service/etc should be involved with.

There is just so nothing professional or serious about *paid* appraisals.

It's really bordering to scamming clueless enduser domain owners in my view.

To this day i don't understand why for instance Sedo doesn't get rid of their paid "Expert evaluation of a domain name's value" service - there is no such thing as a professional appraisal so why do they insist on pretending like there is one ?!

Stay away from paid appraisals AT ALL i say.

Things have the value that people think they have for them personally.

People can agree or disagree about value or whatever, but advisors should respect the opinion of potential sellers and buyers instead of proclaiming that there are scientific methods to price whatever thing while it is not true.

Appraisers try to convince people to believe their value estimation assumptions.
It is an industry, and it is just as in any doctrine: The founders invent rules while the believers must pay to belong to the foundation and to profit from some services.

It is very simple: Or the appraisers have no idea about economic principles (marketing etc.) or they deliberately desinform would-be domainers to keep their business up.
Be it so, but don't do it to me: I am not a rookie.

I don't mind people questioning my experience and discussing my comments. I had all sorts of offers on my domains and I can wait until I receive bids that are acceptable for me. I don't use third party services excepted for my dedicated servers.

The main reason why some professionals are upset: They can't profit from me.

This is odd because most everyone say's paid registrar appraisals are way to high, not too low to the point of ruining pending sales.

allroundguy, do you mind if I ask -- were your lost sales all conducted via email, where the buyer backed out after requesting an appraisal from one of three appraisal companies? If so, it is likely that you have fallen victim to an email scam that is going around, and the "buyer" was never interested in buying your domains at all. The scam in this case is that the third (lesser-known, but lowest priced) of the three is actually their own appraisal system. They are just trying to drive people to purchase appraisals, but have no interest in buying your domain(s).
