btw, folks, there is nothing to worry about the value of .net domains going down!
The value is not dependent on the initial price of the domain.
How many times do you sell a domain and say, well, I only paid x for it, so I will sell for z?
The resale value 99 times out of 100 has nothing to do with what you paid for it.
Additionally, this will help make .net domains even more scarce as good phrases disappear from the mines. That, in effect, will make prices (read:values) go up.

Domain traders don't like .net domains for any reason, but .net is much undervalued. For "normal" Internet users .net is a very common and popular extension. There are actually even more than 6 million .net domains. Therefore we should not forget that .net is still the best gTLD after .com.

I already stated that you were correct. I made the mistake of trying to help answer the question by using Google and that's what I came up with. However, I was aware that the first domains were available in 1985 but it was not something that was at the forefront of my mind as I was amidst heavy multi-tasking.
