pool is pure malakies.
you can bid, and get a domain ehre only you where the bidder, and get it for many more $ than it is worth, or at least worth in a fair bidding system.

Want proof???

It looks like you are correct. According to Pool's terms and conditions, an auction is now performed regardless of the number of people who put in a backorder (thus including a domain with only one backorderer):

3. Bidding.

In the event that Pool.com is successful in acquiring a domain backordered by a customer, Pool.com will conduct a two part auction among each customer who backordered such domain and the domain will be registered on behalf of the highest bidder in such auction. An auction will be conducted regardless of how many customers backordered a domain...

Keep in mind, however, that just because you win a domain without bidding still does not mean that you were necessarily the only customer who backordered the domain.

At first, you needed to fight with the human ghost bidders when Pool first came out to get your booty.

Now, you need to fight with real ghosts as well?

It's the demons behind the scenes that scare the hell out of me.
Where's a drop Exorcist when you need one?

I placed a Sealed Bid recently on a domain and apparently didnt advance to the second phase. The process doesn't seem very transparent to me. Will I ever find out what the name went for? What am I supposed to do, double, triple my bid next time and cross my fingers or perhaps just give up on it?

even if you are the ONLY bidder, you will go through these stages, feeling all paranoid etc...
you will bid more, and finally get a $60 (pool worth's) for whatever you were scared into bidding!

I was getting 20 domains a month thru them. Haven't tried for even one since the new auction model took over. Screw them.

They need to learn their lesson.

Sheesh. I just encountered this "sealed bid" thing. This is horrible. Like some twisted round of "The Price is Right" (popular game show in the U.S.) I made one bid, then upped it to make sure I wasn't sniped by being too busy in a couple of days... and then... then I learn its NOT a proxy, and that I'm potentially bidding against myself. Niiiiice. This is horrible. ( Adds another permutation of madness to his notes...)

Every continuing soap opera.

I only used Pool once since the change and that was because there was a domain dropping that I had to have so I placed backorders with all the services...and Pool caught it. Otherwise, I could care less about Pool anymore. I must have won 20+ domains with Pool and the domain ended up with a registrar where there was no english to be found and/or no managament interface and changes to the domain had to be made via email.

The system is purely made to inflate prices, maximize revenue for Pool.com and does absolutely NOTHING to benefit Pool's customers. Can anyone give us a good reason or way that this 2-phase system benefits customers? Its ridiculous! I seriously hope competitors pick up on Pool's losses.

That's very ironic. I had a complaint (read: rant) about the current direction the expire domain industry was going in that basically said... if the most effective domain catcher had no website and did all transactions through e-mail... it'd still be successful, because the current system punishes us all for being on the side called "demand". Oh, well. Interesting to see we've arrived. I've read Duke's registrar trevails, but that's just awful.

In defense of Pool I have gained access to most of the names I received. Recently I did not get the login information from DotEarth and when contacting Pool they basically said we are not responsible please contact the registrar. I emailed the registrar and have my login information the following day.

They key phrase which TopNames said was a name he "had to have". There are plenty of names that I feel that I must have and therefore Pool will maximize the price I am paying above $69. If I do not bid then I will loose the domain to someone else. It's pretty simple that we have no other choice in the matter and must operate within their system like it or not.

And finally pool has no reason to put a system that would benefit the customer as this would only decrease their revenue. They are in business for money and we must use their service if we seriously want a name. Whether or not we accept their system is moot. Kind of ironic eh?

I think overall this market does not benefit from choice but rather would benefit from a standard auction most similiar to the snapnames system. Even the Tucows/Netsol system has it's faults in that the losing register in no way would be obligated to put the names up for sale to the public. Even WLS has it's problems....

I actually think Pool is losing revenue with the new service. I won a lot of domains there under the old system (including three 3 letter .coms) and just 1 since the change.

I know I will not bid my max if I might be the only bidder and very few domains I chase are "must haves"...so I just stopped using them. That's like bidding your max at Club Drop before the name is caught. That would be dumb.

That's what I always thought of those weirdos at Namewinner

I'm still trying to figure this Netsol-Snapnames arrangement of apparently coming in at the RGP stage. Still can't figure how it works, but hopefully this would mean Netsol now doesn't bug the registrant with 35 renew now emails before the ceiling collapses threat, since NOT RENEWING will actually means Netsol gets more revenue for that drop, and it remains at Netsol to boot. Good strategy.

Yea, but at least if you were the high bidder at NameWinner, you got the domain...now there is that nice $50 auction "jumpin" fee. Greed is actaully costing these drop catchers money IMO. There was a time when I tried to catch many domains every day when it only cost $8.75. When the prices were bumped from $8.75 to $30 at NameWinner I stopped using them as well.

i've stop using pool since they added the last 5 minutes system infact, and now this 2 phase thingie makes me not look at pool at ALL
